Only just returned to Reddit and now I can actually contribute advice in a sub I frequented often!

I’ll never forget the day I (yes me) decided to file. We were sat arguing about something stupid. I think it was what colour to paint the walls. And it escalated in the way it always did and went something like this. “ I want the walls to be light green.” “I don’t like light green.” “Ok let’s just not paint them”. “Ok.” “If that’s how you feel let’s not do any wall papering at all.” “Ok.” “Well if you don’t want to work together at all, I don’t see why we even rented this flat togehter!” “Ok.” “Well since you obviously don’t want to live with me let’s just divorce!”

Now at this point, dozens of times before, is usually when I’d back down and go find something nice to drink. But for whatever reason this time I kept going. Started the paperwork that day.

Of course she told me everyone it was me who decided to leave and conveniently failed to mention the escalation or how she was the one who prompted it. It didn’t matter to me though. I hated the town we lived in and didn’t really care if everyone there thought I was the one who wrecked the home.

The first couple years weren’t impossible, but I had very very little room to make mistakes. After I landed my first job when I finished my masters things began to soar, and in the decade since I’ve never looked back.

For anyone wondering if they should just go through with it, I knew for about a year it was going to happen, I just didn’t know when. If you know it’s going to happen, start preparing now.

My life is better than anyone, me included, could’ve imagined it would be. Most people thought I’d crash and burn on my own. Fuck them. I’m doing better than all of them now and living the life I deserve.
