Right now things are going okay, we are in marriage counseling, and we are not separated or anything. No infidelity, no abuse. Just two people that don't have much in common anymore. However, I want to have a plan and know what to expect if we end up going the divorce route (it could potentially be years from now). I know I should probably talk to an attorney, and I plan to do so, but I would really like some insight from those that have gone through this before. I will not take any comments here as legal advice.

  • Theoretically, if you knew divorce was coming in the next few years, what should I be doing NOW to limit how much I'll get fu**ed over by the divorce settlement?
  • I know if we got divorced my wife would want to go live near her parents (several states away) and would want to take the kids with her. Would she be able to do that? Or do I have any rights as the father to insist the kids live nearby (where we have lived the last 3 years)?
  • My wife is in a cult (mormon) and I would like to protect my kids as much as possible from being brainwashed. How likely is it that I could get the settlement agreement to restrict them from becoming baptized members until they're 18?
  • I have one kid under 5. Wife has been and currently is a stay at home mom with this child. What kind of custody outcome(s) would be typical in this situation?
  • I occasionally use cannabis in a state where it is currently illegal. Could my wife use this in court against me? If so, what can I do now to preempt this?

TIA!
