My experience and what I've seen, filing first meant I wasn't scrambling when she pulled the trigger, I had time to get finances organized and document quietly, and when she tried to escalate I was already 10 steps ahead with my attorney instead of playing catch-up.....guys who got served without warning often spent months just stabilizing from the shock while their ex controlled the board. The conventional wisdom is, if you know it's coming and reconciliation is dead, file first so you're prepared and proactive instead of blindsided and reactive, because in divorce being reactive costs you time, money, and leverage. The only exception is if you're not ready (finances a mess, no lawyer, evidence not documented).....then waiting to prepare is worth it, but don't wait so long she files first with allegations that put you in a hole.

If can be helpful to freeze financial things in place and keep everyone on their best behavior. Theoretically 😝. The psychological benefits to everyone can be real in terms of making something real that was only spoken of or assumed impossible before.

There’s no definitive benefit but it can be helpful in some situations more than others. That said there’s no magic in it. Completing the proposals for exactly the money split you want and child care stuff that works beforehand and having it ready to ship is just as helpful.
