When someone says "Be a man" or "Man up", they are referencing a set of values and characteristics that are considered to be positive in general. "He's a great man". To 'be a man' has meant at various times and various degrees to mean:

  • Strong
  • Stoic
  • Honorable, honest, trustworthy
  • Hardworking, a provider
  • Intelligent
  • Daring, adventurous

Also some less great stuff about being aggressive, dominant, etc etc.

To be 'a woman' has only ever had negative traits ascribed to it. To be 'a woman about it' means:

  • Weak
  • No control of your emotions
  • Manipulative or conniving
  • Physically appealing (eg, phew what a woman!)

I would like to flip that script. I'd like to see a set of positive values being associated with being a woman, and I'd like to hold myself to them.

What are some positive attributes of womanhood that you value or would like to see associated with the characteristics of being a great woman? A few on my list: Rational. Empathetic. Hardworking. Generous and kind (to those who deserve it). Self sufficient.
