When I was dumped he offered up the “but I hope to be friends” line. I scoffed, (not condescendingly, I was very sad) and said “that really isn’t our style so let’s not lie to each other”. This was 5 years ago.
A mutual acquaintance told me very recently that he asks after me. He even mentioned my last words specifically; maybe as an excuse as to why he’s speaking about me? I found it surprising because I don’t really think about this ex at all anymore, and I’ve always been relieved to not think about the people I’ve broken it off with so I would think he would be the same.
I think maybe the absolute cut off leaves men with doubts. Not that that provides any relief in the terribleness of breaking it off, but maybe it bolsters your own self respect in the long run. It allows you to properly grieve.

I agree. I don't think trying to convince men to come back or trying to stay friends in hope they change their mind works at all in that favor. I do believe that exes can be friends but only after a long while after the break up and only when there's no feelings or expectations from any of the parts.
I also observe that if you still like your ex and you're still around being his friend after he dumped you, you're holding his hand through the breakup making him feel better while you still suffer. You make the transition easier for them. And by doing that you also increase the chances of them finding someone and having a long lasting relationship with them because you give them the confidence to pursue new relationships knowing that if everything goes wrong you're there for them and you can even get back together. That helps their future relationships but hurts you and sets back your progress to move on.

Ah this! I been there myself. He had no midlife crisis but he had some serious alcoholic issues. I was there for him all the time. Then he just moves on by cheating on me without telling me that he has no feelings for me? It took me like 6 months to actually understand that he was cheating on me. NEVER EVER WASTE YOUR LIFE ON SOME GUY WHO HAS CRISIS OR ANY FUCKING ISSUE.!! Its complete waste of time.
I don't know if this is relevant here, we women should really prioritize ourselves than on men to be honest. They end up getting better chances than us generally. You will be left alone rather than him being miserable. They have one or the other person to help them out. Don't be too soft on men after break up. More you give your shoulder, more they take you for granted and then they step on you.

“Never waste your life on some guy who has a crisis any fucking issue”
So true. My ex was a crazy mess of mental issues and bullshit. I tried to save him and fix him but it’s not worth it. Still got screwed in the end. Do not recommend.

So you’re just going to date guys who are perfect? That doesn’t fucking exist. Every single human being has issues, you’re not going to run into a single one that doesn’t.

There are no perfect guys. Every people have issues. I agree on that. But not gonna date guy who are adamant about their issues and don't work on it. Most likely you damage yourself if you give yourself too much though. If you are lucky enough, you will find the person who is gonna be there for you at the same. Majority of them don't really give a fuck if you have issues, they care about themselves than you would to yourself.

Wether it's a relationship or just dating, never come back or stand waiting after being dumped or rejected. It doesn't work and it will only hurt.
