I've been socialized to be relatively restrictive with my food intake, since I grew up in a rich white suburb. I eat maybe 1000 calories a day on average and I'm about one point away from being underweight (BMI of 19). I only eat whole foods (i.e. nothing processed). Mostly fruits and veggies, with some proteins and rice thrown in.

My dad got me these deep friend oreo beignets the other day and I physically couldn't eat them. (another story entirely as to why he bought them when he knows I don't eat desserts)

Later on, I thought about why that was. From a health perspective, one oreo beignet wasn't going to hurt me. I was shocked to realize I wasn't restricting myself for my health. I was restricting myself because I had a fear of becoming less attractive. Because if society shames anyone the most, it's fat women.

This quote by Jennifer Love Hewitt has some truth to it:

Yeah. People post stuff like, “Fat women aren’t attractive,” and, “I think tattoos are ok on men but on women they are trashy,” and, “Single moms shouldn’t date.” Or whatever other brilliant ideas pop into their heads that they feel the need to share with the world. It’s like they think women’s only reason for existing is to try to please them. Like if I had an opinion about a total stranger’s appearance, I wouldn’t assume that anyone gave a crap about my opinion because why would they? But these men think their opinions are valuable for some reason.

It's everywhere.

The lure of anonymity encourages people to post their oh-so-shocking revelations, that are your standard sexist comments. Unpopular opinion is the same.

All the mainstream Reddit subs are like that. Reddit has some of the worst men I’ve ever known of so ignore it. They’re almost all like that here.
