T;DR I moved away from my college city a few months ago and was only recently able to let go of the guy there that I had a thing with.

I was so scared that I was going to run into him and make an idiot of myself. I was also nervous about asking for a place to stay because it used to be a given that I would stay with him. But I finally got the courage and...

It went amazing! I crashed at my old apartment and caught up with my roommates while I was getting ready. I had a friend's leaving dinner and drinks Friday, where I hung out with old friends, made some new ones, and made a great reconnection with someone I knew in dorms but didn't know well. My friend told me that I meant a lot to her and she hopes we can stay friends after she moves cities. She's not super emotional or open so that really meant a lot to hear.

Saturday I fought through a hangover to get brunch with another good college friend I haven't seen properly in months. We laughed and told stories and gossiped about work and spent the next five hours shopping and hanging out in the park, during which she gave me a glowing sales pitch for a Satisfyer pro 😂 That night I watched a movie with another roommate and went out for cocktails with another one of them. Then this morning we all got brunch and hung out until I had to drive home.

I feel free in a way that I really didn't expect, and I realised it's because this whole weekend, no one wanted anything from me. All I had to do was show up. I didn't have to organise my life around anyone but myself. I always felt like I needed to look or act or dress sexy for him, or give him lots of notice for my plans. The last time I was in town he had me wait four hours at his house during the morning while I was at work, then basically kidnapped me to take me out to lunch under the promsie of dropping me off at myfriend's place. But this time I set my own schedule completely and it felt amazing.

The only downside was that I had to sleep on a lumpy couch and a trash air mattress instead of in a King with someone to cuddle, but there was also no one lying on that couch expecting me to have sex with them as a thank you for the generosity of a roof over my head.

I want to thank every member of this sub who has ever advocated the importance of friendships over romantic relationships. You are 100% right and I'm glad I was able to see this in time.
