Not to be a drag on your parade, but technically the Crown SAVES the average UK citizen taxes. Because of arcane and ancient land arrangements, you actually pay LESS tax than you would if the Crown as you know it were abolished. It's not a lot of savings, mind you, but it is an objective fact that despite the scandals of living memory, the Crown's still a net gain on the UK economy.

Sure, the government could appropriate the Crown's land: The government could also walk outside the Parliament building, douse themselves in gasoline, and collectively immolate themselves. Governments can theoretically do any of a number of amazingly asinine things (and sometimes they DO, to catastrophic effect).
I've already said it here, the Crown (despite any personal failings it's members might have) is a net BENEFIT to the entirety of the UK. This can't even be disputed, it's a point of cold, mathematical fact. England without the Crown would make less money, and pay more taxes than with the Crown.
Besides, even if the government was to be THAT foolish, the Royal Family then has an iron-clad case for 2 things: 1 - given that the power of the government is derived from the Crown, they have the right to declare any government that would strip them of their rights as dissolved, and thus any action they take would be invalid. 2 - failing that, the Royal Family would then be able to tie the government up in the courts perpetually because they've had a nearly uninterrupted legal claim to those lands for over 950 years, with all the documentation to go along with it. Any person who was responsible for a nationalization effort would have to then be charged with not only theft without compensation, but treason.
I mean, all of this is mostly academic, but even the most rabid leftist would be a fool to want anything like that.
