Recent mechanical grad (job hunting is fubar, but defense is still hiring). I like to focus on prostheses, ballistics armor and anything high-tech.

So yes, I plan on making a powered exosuit in my garage for fun. I'll set aside the childish dreams of becoming a vigilante hero and astronaut. For now.

Im a firmware engineer, love the work. I enjoy solving problems and figuring shit out and I especially enjoy the status of having that job.

The Issue: I have a lot of knowledge and expertise with which the company invested a ton of dollars. Sometimes between projects, its gets boring and I'll work like 4 or 5 hours a week and honestly it makes me want to look for new work. When your a task oriented engineer, being bored at work (even just between projects) is hell.

Oh boy. Just know that design engineers work MINIMUM 60 hour work weeks. Get ready for tight deadlines, staying at work at night, high stress, etc. There are some people that are very passionate about it though and don't mind the workload (those guys tend to sure be out there). I'm not in design, but I'm pretty much in the rat race corporate slave role. Working 7 days a week. But I was always in it for the paycheck, I'm a straight up mercenary. Only did engineering because it was the only career where I could graduate with just a bachelors and make good money out of college. So you might want to take what I say with a grain of salt.

But that's only after you get through the hell that engineering in college is. You have to be relentless, committed, and focused if you want to make it through.

And you have to be sure to snag some sort of experience like an internship as well, have good interviewing skills.

It's worth it to me simply because it pays well, there's more job opportunities in comparison to other careers (as an engineer you can work in any city)

I will say a lot of this is dependent on the major you choose. I majored in what many consider one of the hardest engineering majors, which also tends to attract some of the biggest geeks who skew the grad distribution and also are workaholics at the job, so my experience definitely had something to do with it.

But my opinion is that if you go to college, there are only two majors that are worth it: engineering or IT. otherwise it's just useless.

I am trained as an engineer, but wasn't able to get a job when I graduated because of the market. This is also probably because I don't fit into the mold of "diversity", and therefore, I was discriminated against.

Engineering may help society too much, and you don't want to do that according to MGTOW doctrine. Don't try to help society, just get a job that supports you, and that is good for you.

It can be a bit soul-sucking when you do engineering for business purposes, because many projects are cleaning up messes rather than creative endeavors. Maybe I just got unlucky with my projects. A lot of cool ideas get shut down to save time or money.

Do what you enjoy. By not getting involved with relationships or marriage you don't have the burden to provide.

Saying you want to do engineering to make stuff is like saying you want to be entrepreneur to make money. It does not say "how" or what your experience will be like. An entrepreneur who started a web design studio had an entirely different experience than one who started an accounting business.

Software developers are engineers. They implement, not invent.
Mechanical engineers are engineers. They make machines, not invent.
Chemical engineers are engineers. They analyze, not invent.

Figure out what you want to work with, and whether you want to invent and discover brand new stuff, or if you're more interested in making stuff.

Then go about asking people who do that hing specifically, what is the experience like.

live of an engineer its not inventing or creating new stuff for the vast majority of us

but its mostly cool job where you can focus on technical stuff and with a good pay

but maybe you will be one of the inventor creator type

Civil here - lots of demand for work, lots of flexibility to work on what you want, not to taxing mentally, there's no inventing but when your clients are happy it's great

Locomotive Engineer, its got all the perks and none of the debt.... equal amount of sleepless nights tho. Works not physically demanding 6 figure pay, no student debt good unions. most of the time you are just left alone to do you're job.

As someone who actually works on things engineers make. LISTEN TO THE PEOPLE WHO WORK ON THEM. Don't be a retard and take feedback. Actually look at, and learn in person, what you're supposed to be educated on. Dont be afraid to get dirty. Thanks.

I'm a technician in an Engineering spot... I do Aerospace engineering. Essentially making sure uploaded commands go to appropriate sub components, the payload, trending solar array positions/charge, orbital analysis, etc. I love it! It can be stressful, but it's a rewarding career. I've been doing it since 2003.
