Russian here, don't be fooled by the numbers. A lot of it comes from the fact, that men in Russia have on average a much lower lifespan(mostly coz of raging alcoholism, or formerly raging, don't know the current statistics) than women. So you surplus of women might as well be the leftover babushkas.

As a Russian . Our situation is slightly better than in the west . It is primarily due to the fact that we haven't been invaded with 3rd wave feminism on a large scale .

It was told many times over. Due to great difference (one of the largest in the world) between life expectancy of men and women in Russia, all "extra" women are old. Women start to outnumber men in age cohorts older than 32.

"Waves" on the pyramid are caused by losses in WW2 and make any momentary measurement of crude birth rate in Russia very unreliable method of analysis because all socioeconomic factors are overshadowed by sheer difference in numbers between generations depending on whether they are descendants of age cohort that suffered the worst in and after WW2.
