Ok, I have a degree I the field but from a LONG time ago. So literally, everything useful I know now is self taught. That was the case something like 3 years after graduation. You can bootstrap your career. Always keep learning. Tech is by and large a meritocracy.

I’m self taught. No degree. I’m a web developer, c# mainly. Too many people think it’s their ticket to riches though. If you don’t enjoy it, forget it.

The thing I like about it the most is, it is heavily male dominated, at least more than most industries, and it is a meritocracy, rather than just politics and giving promotions to those who talk the most shit.

Have you had any exposure to programming yet? It's not for everyone, and I mean that both in the sense that some people struggle to learn and others struggle to do it day in day out for long periods of time.

Just from my experience, just remember you'll be a dev. A coder, a programmer. You're not a scientist. You're not an engineer. You're a technician. You're smart enough to type code into a keyboard and that's it. You settled for the job. Don't whine because no one takes you seriously. If you want to be a professional go into game development.

I learn languages on my own... you just need to passion, determination and stickablility and you can achieve what you wish. Man sh*t.

Self-taught here. Learned every flavor of SQL for business intelligence, data analytics, reporting, etc. I highly recommend it, it's an in-demand job skill. I have no college degree and I earn $80k/year working for state government. Great insurance and retirement on top of a good salary, and I'm only 40. Currently learning Visual Basic for vendor system development too.

Self taught QA Engineer here.

While I'm not a developer, I do write code (selenium webdriver /cypress.io with Javascript) for testing and for any adhoc scripts that I need.

This was done with a combination of pluralsight course/udemy and on the job experience.

Currently on £50k after about 8yrs in the role.

Current career objectives is to move Into a quality assurance devops role and these types of salaries can be anywhere from £60k to £80k.

Ita definitely doable if you put the time and effort in.

Self taught here in Vancouver, BC. Dropped out of college. 100k+ web developer. Life is good, but not everyone is made for this. Took me about 3 years of hard grind.

Started as telecoms engineer with coding for automating my work, self taught into actual dev role (better hours, better money, no customers :D) about 4 years later:

You will need *some* certification to get past the HR screen, even if it's just a HND
Look at freelancer.com and try some of the easier tasks they talk about on your own to see the pitfalls you'll encounter. They sometimes do coding bounty competitions too
All the trendy kids use python , commercial instruments use Java and (sadly) C#
I spent a single university course in 2008 (4~ hrs/week over one term) learning about database theory and practice expecting to just run the servers that they'd sit on. This on its own established my career because it appears nobody knows how to make good databases, queries or back end interfaces below the £30k/year mark, and the 30k+/year people have too much to do already
Your location makes the world of difference, a job that pays 30k in Scotland would pay £50k in London, and sadly some managers believe physical presence is important to software development
