ESR 12 dude. Robotics is going to be huge. You can go work for Boston Dynamics or something, this is just the beginning. ESR 8 and 11 is also going to be solid money makers, especially on energy saving. All about energy saving as of late so if you can PHD into that, you'll get solid prospects. Arm up with knowledge and go your own way.

I'm not going to pretend like I know much about any of these fields of research. I think a better question would be which of them do you think you would be most happy with? Which of them do you think your skills could be best applied? Ultimately, you're going to make money with any of these choices, so pick the one that best suits you.

Dont think about money man, go to the path which will make you happy and the money will come to you.

All these fields are promising. Cyber security, Self Learning Ai/Tech, Robotics, Process Automation are all amazing.

Just go with what interests you. Im gonna be finishing my Computer Systems bachelors soon and i am excited to enter the field. Thing is, what you do here is not setting your future in stone, you might end up in a job thats completely different than your specialized subfield and you may find that more interesting than what you learn here.

Keep your options open, pursue what you love, and never stop exploring.

Engineer here myself. Did a Ph.D. and then 2 year postdoc at Bell Labs back in the day.

These are all very practical projects and I have no experience in the field so I can't make specific recommendations.

But I'd really suggest you go with what grabs you. Technology changes fast. Learn the fundamentals, whether is abstract math, applied physics or machine shop work. Don't look down your nose at anything, theory or applied. You have no idea what is going to be useful 5, 10, 20 or more years from now.

Also, there's nothing worse than getting stuck with a supervisor and/or a research group that's just fucking around, going no where and just putting in time. They sure as fuck exist. Everyone looks good on paper. Bullshitters and fuck ups exist everywhere.

If you ever find yourself in that situation I very much recommend you don't stick it out. Figure out early if you're stuck with losers and bail. Once you're there for a year you'll know who the movers and winners are and who are the fuck ups. Zero in on the winners and stick with them. If you have to change supervisors to do it then do it. The earlier the easier it is and the better for you thesis work and career. I had to do that twice but it paid off. You're not there to make friends.

If money is what you're looking for, go for energy fields, medical research, materials testing for engineers, chemistry fields, naval and aeronautical engineering, food technology, building supercomputers, and commercial space travel.

Just be ethical about it. Don't create a chicken that grows to slaughter weight in a week but gives us cancers.
