There are very few female characters that actually have a long and arduous training period to explain their skills.

Black Lagoon handles it well with Revy, Eda and Cpt. Balalaika without making them insufferable cunts. It's not hard to do, but writers nowadays aren't making anything interesting.

In superhero movies and in video games where people can fly and call down thunder and warp time and generally tell Isaac Newton to go fuck himself, it's more believable that muscle mass and general biology are thrown out the window. If I can suspend my disbelief to the point that a guy can manipulate time, I can suspend my disbelief to the point that a 100 pound woman can beat the shit out of a 200 pound man.

But it's movies and media that are supposed to be more rooted in reality (e.g. crime dramas) where this becomes flat out ridiculous.

More importantly though is the fact that female characters are just poorly written period. Rey would still be a garbage character if she were a man but everything else stayed the same.
