Fuck yeah man, those "nerds" know what's up. When I was in 4th/5th grade, Yu-Gi-Oh was blowing up in America. I used to hide my cards in my books and play with the geeks at recess behind the school building so nobody would catch me with them. It was mad shitty of me, but those guys were cool and I had a blast. I hang my head that I was embarrassed to do what I love, but we all live and learn.

I was a freshman in high school when Yu-Gi-Oh cards took off in the US and me and some friends were always playing at launch. We played out in the open though because we didn't give a shit, but we did have to deal with a bunch of other kids laughing at us. We just ignored them.
The irony is those same people that laughed at us would be all into Yu-Gi-Oh now if it was a major successful motion picture lol.

During my HS days I was hanging out with a bunch of guys from my web design class and we'd go to the computer lab of our teacher and he'd let us play Halo Combat Evolved (modded w/ sticky grenades instead of sniper bullets) on his computers running Windows XP. Great times were had.

One of the best memories I have from junior high was teaming up with two "geeks" for a project we were assigned on a field trip. It was something about geology and minerals. These guys schooled me on this cool shit about geology and we ended up finishing in less than 45 mins. We were given the entire afternoon.
I was a headbanger who just wanted to get high, play bass and listen to Rush. These guys were already playing chess "online" with guys from across the planet on their prehistoric comps using a phone line. I have no idea what they were doing or how but it was amazing to hear lol. This was around 1985?
After we did the assignment we walked around the park and just talked and laughed and turns out these guys were hardcore prog metal fans and horror movie fanatics so we were all dropping names, albums and movies and having a blast. They were the first people to tell me about Dario Argento.
They told me they didn't give a shit about girls. One kid was Indian ( teepee not slurpee) and he was in a foster home and he hated his real family and never wanted to be around any Indian again. He had some fucked up shit done to him back on the reserve.
They knew they were ugly and no one wanted them so they lived to study, learn about comps and listen to music. They were totally free from all the usual teenage bullshit. They were smart but didn't make a big deal of it. One of them told me "you seem different from all the other metalhead guys. I realized that first day of class". I guess he was right. I never picked on anyone or classified them. Man I wish I could live that day over and over.
The Breakfast Club had just come out at that time and it was like we all knew, just as in the movie, that tommorrow we wouldn't hang out. Or barely even acknowledge each other. My douchebag friends, girls included, ended up riding my ass for weeks about hanging with the nerds.
I wanted to hang out with these guys again but I was too cowardly. Ashamed just thinking about it. Although we did nod to each other in the hall when we could, and I ended up kicking the shit out of a guy that was bullying one of them a few years later. That felt good. I fucking hate bullies.
One died from cancer at 31. I went to his funeral. Seemed like he had a decent life. Bachelor. IT guru. Grew up into a decent looking guy so I hope and assume he made up for his HS pussy-famine.
The other guy does top secret IT work for the Canadian gov. Went into the army at 19. Probably makes $100k base salary plus half that freelancing on the side doing piddly coding and teaching. I don't think he ever married.
All my stoner "friends" are dead, in jail ( one ended up murdering someone) or are now midlife fuckups, fat losers with five kids working at landscaping companies.
Hang with the geeks, my friends. They truly will inherit the earth.

I get a little misty at times thinking about it. It was one of those perfect days you can only have when you're young. I remember passing by this parked car and a couple, about 19-20, were sitting on the hood looking at the duck pond. They had the radio on loud and it was playing "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" by Tears for Fears and in a flash that moment was imprinted on my brain. Every time I hear that song I can fucking smell that day, feel it, hear it. I don't miss being a teenager for anything but that day makes me want to be young again.
