I have a hypothesis that some become monks or join some contemplative order so they have license to "drop out." If you're a regular guy with very few possessions, some people will characterize you as weird. I had a co-worker who, when people found that his house was mainly empty and he slept on a camping pad on the floor, people talked about him like he must be a serial killer.

But if you have very few possessions and yet you throw a picture of Buddha on your wall and claim to be on a "spiritual journey" then people think you're deep and they give you license to have a minimalistic lifestyle. I guess people need to think they understand you, and religion they understand. Just dropping out, with no larger spiritual or religious context, befuddles them.

The problem with Buddhism today is that most of it had been modernized to fit in the gynocentric society. If you look at the root of Buddhism (now known as Theravada Buddhism today), you will find that Buddha really understood female nature and put the Buddhist nuns under the complete control of the monks. The most senior nun must always pay respect to even a monk who just ordains on his first day.

But now, there are many sects of Buddhism that aims to empower women just like feminism by ignoring Buddha's original teachings. Mahayana Buddhism is the prime example of this. If you ever visit a Vietnamese or Chinese Buddhist temples, you might run into a statue of a woman they worship. The Mahayana monks are also allowed to have money as well. The Japanese Zen monks are also allowed to marry. Don't even mention Dalai Lama. His version of Buddhism is so politically correct some feminists and SJWs actually think they are Buddhists because of him.

Even Theravada Buddhism is losing its way. Look at Thailand for example, most famous monks have so much money from donation they can afford to get several secret wives. They ride around in luxury cars when most Thai people can't even afford a budget car.

It is a shame that Buddhism is corrupted to this extent. But I think that MGTOW men have the most likely chance to find Buddhism in its original form. That's because these men understand mental suffering and female nature. Buddhism is simply a philosophy that teaches people to end their own suffering by eliminating and controlling their own desires that are the cause of suffering.

MGTOW men know how their desires for women and their actions to fulfill such desire lead them to suffering. The path to end suffering is to stop desiring women by understanding what women really are.

I would guest most guys on this sub aren't interested in dicipline like that.

But i definitely see the virtue in it. Lots of men in the past were mgtow too from taoista to shamans to scientists and philosophers.

These days we seem to be sort of on the low of people like that but there arestill men in the mountains in the east who are cultivating the wisdom of nature and life. Personally I agree that societies trends and events will do a pretty job of keeping people from waking up

To an extent, i can agree.

Right now I am technically still married, well i should say "legally", but she and I removed our rings and sleep in different rooms - you get the idea.

Since our splitting we still will make meals (she makes the majority of them, so i will give her than) but i am perfectly capable of making great meals too.

Anyway - when she is gone doing, whatever, i notice that i actually take better care of myself and cultivate self improvement much better than when she is around. I exercise more, eat better and less, and keep everything in perfect order. As we share a common living room and bathroom, when she is there - it always ends up messy. My room is always neat.

Though somewhat petty, just an example after we split and i decided to be done with her and even wanting another mess in my life, she still sideswipes my self improvement and living environment.

There wasn't supposed to be guilt in Buddhism, if you messed up, you got up and moved on. In Christianity you feared Eternal Hellfire.

I reject Buddhism on its tenants of radical altruism, complete self rejection and using self body shaming tactics to cultivate non attachment. Though non attachment is good I think it comes naturally with wisdom in old age.

I also still like sex and I enjoy being productive and making good money. Big paychecks make me smile with noisome mirth lol

Meditation used with cardio and weight training makes you a bamf lol

When I practiced I was 3 years Nichiren Buddhism and 1.5 Tibetan
