It stems from gaming culture, but I think it’s ok to liken it to zombies. TheWalking Dead with spoon fed politicized opinions, no actual personal agency. At least that’s my take.

They don't have a mind of their own but just repeat everything the way it's been scripted into them at compile time.

This is why they don't get what they're not told by the MuhScreamMudya - which is why MSM is so butthurt by it. Basically "They live" exposed.

It confuses me because I am a gamer, who is big on RPGs.

An NPC is preprogrammed. It doesn't have original thought nor free will. It just does what it is programmed to do for no reward other than to please the creator/player of the game.

Have we become so sheepish as a society where the majority of people want to fit in so bad they parrot themselves with "socially acceptable" phrases?

NPC - Non-player character. The characters in game that other players aren't playing, they are programmed with what to say and do. Just like lefties and tradcons tend to be, they just say either "muh whyte babies!" or "sexist!" as a kneejerk reaction. The vast majority of people are NPCs since they lack rational and critical thinking, they just say what they are programmed and expected to say. What the vast majority are going to say is so predictable that one can believe that they have been programmed.

If people want me to consider them to be fully human, they need to be able to think for themselves, and not just belch out what they have been programmed with.

NPC is a replacement for SJW. A NPC is a non player character that follows only pre programmed actions and dialog.
