Career vs. Life priority

I did it all wrong, so while I have a high-paying career, I'm on the hook until standard pension age.

If I did it again, I'd take the same route, but begin earlier and without a nagging wife, and I'd be able to retire comfortably in my 40s. I'm personally not into the whole "learning to live on as little as possible," but with a decent career, comfortable retirement should be pretty easy ~45-50.

Remember you should be working for something. Work is not its own end. A promotion, retiring early, moving somewhere cool, buying a house, starting your own business/consulting, saving up $X, whatever. If it's a promotion, you should have a rough idea of what you're going for after that and what happens on the very possible chance you don't get it.

I have high-school friends with 300-500k jobs but are married with multiple kids so will be stuck doing that for another 10-15 years, including paying for college.

But if you don't marry or have kids, and thus don't need to live in a big city with high costs of living and leftist taxes, that takes a lot expenses off the table and gives you more of your life to do whatever the fuck you want. Including nothing. I do a lot of nothing.

I quit my job at 39 and I'm almost 50 now, with more money than when I left, and live in the Colorado mountains. Your move.

I try to work as little as possible and occupy my mind with as little work related information as possible

I feel more exhausted when I'm on holiday organising everything and doing stuff

Depends on life situation, if you are ambitious then obviously career driven. If you want to chill and be a family man or be able to take time for yourself more then that. Theres cheat codes to both. You could start a business and beome successful.
