I live alone. No girlfriend, no wife, no ex-girlfriend, nothing. And I like it. A LOT. When I enter my place and close the door I hear SILENCE. No nagging, no complaining, no nothing. When I get old I probably won't have a wife to push my wheelchair around, but hey, I may hire a housekeeper for that. Is cheaper than a wife. And at the end of the day the housekeeper goes HOME.

I rent a room in a friend's house. We're both in our sixties. Mostly we just give each other space, and there has been zero conflict or drama in the three years I've been here. No sweating the small stuff, and it's all small stuff these days. No close family living, got the VA for medical, and a 9MM if it gets too shitty.

Roommates.

They help break up the monotony of a long weekend at home but they can be ignored with a good set of noise cancelling headphones. Once these move out I probably won't be getting any new ones especially since I plan on turning this house into a rental property and buying another one within a few years.

My Chocolate Lab really helps also.

Currently alone (albeit with pets ... and neighbors who either stop by, or who I visit with every few days)... but for nearly a decade I had a roommate who needed a helping hand to get back on his proverbial feet (and who having done so and moved on to his own home, still remains a close friend, and somewhat of a "nearby/occasional on call" helper, about as reliable {i.e. or unreliable} as an actual "son" would be).

And it would certainly be possible to take in someone else on a similar basis.

The thing that IMO is nearly always ignored or forgotten (or just not spoken of because it is somewhat depressing/anxiety inducing) though is that -- even for married people with children -- a lot of the time the majority of them DO end up "living alone" in their older years.

Why? Well, multiple reasons.

First the chances that a marriage will "endure" -- and especially that it will endure in a healthy fashion, is probably less likely these days than ever before, no need to elaborate on that I think... end result is that one is left "alone" (and often ill-equipped or ill-prepared to do so) just when the companionship/care are needed most.
Secondly -- even WHEN a marriage endures, then it is almost inevitable that one spouse will predecease the other -- and the remaining longer living spouse, whether widow (female) or widower (male) will generally spend anywhere from a few years to decades "alone" (and, having become accustomed to NOT living alone will probably experience it as a far more negative thing).
Thirdly, even in the cases where one spousal partner has not pre-deceased the other, one of the pair will often be so debilitated that they become an inordinate burden on the remaining partner (which means even MORE work than living alone) and/or get shuffled off to a "nursing home" or other facility (which means in effect that BOTH partners end up living "alone" for years if not decades).
Finally, is that -- unlike previously common multi-generation households -- one's children/heirs tend to be unreliable, as they generally move away (often a substantial distance -- indeed not infrequently hundred of miles, several states, or even a continent or ocean away) and moreover live almost entirely distinct/separate lives in their own households, with their own families, burdens, concerns taking precedence, etc. (i.e. "Cats in the Cradle")

Now that is NOT necessarily inevitable -- it is entirely possible (a matter of planning/choice) for a older person to ALTER their living circumstances on purpose: to purposefully obtain prior to their "dotage" some long term arrangement for a younger roommate or roommates (live-in "helper(s)") in exchange for either free or low-cost rent; and possibly some additional eventual "inheritance" boon) as well as other "benefits" (NO, not THAT -- I simply mean living in a larger/nicer home, possibly tools, appliances, vehicles, and other amenities, etc that the younger person(s) could not otherwise afford to own/or even have access to) of cohabiting with an older/richer person (said person could be an immediate or extended family member, or even entirely unrelated, though the latter will probably require more direct/immediate compensation, and possibly the "sell-down" of assets).

In fact such things used to be relatively common; in many parts of the world (or even in the US with recent immigrant families, and sometimes among wealthy long established families) it is STILL fairly common for a childless (often "aunt" or "uncle" whether actual or just so-named) to "take in" a younger (teen or young adult) second or third child of their siblings/relatives -- a nephew or niece or cousin (single or sometimes with spouse and even children) -- exchanging "care" for present/future gain. (If you are unwed and childless, then SOMEONE is going to inherit -- one way or another -- and there is {or shouldn't be} anything negative about the older person FAIRLY getting something of value -- companionship & care -- in exchange.)

To that last, though most people are unaware of it (it is not even on their "radar") it is entirely possible to extend it all the way to a literal, legal "adoption" of one adult by another -- something that has a long history going back to ancient times, and which is generally still quite legal (if uncommon) in most nations -- though of course other arrangements that are short of that are also possible by mutual agreement & contract (definition in wills, etc) even in those that don't.

I'm 32, I have Crohn's disease and I live alone. I LOVE it. Much better than when I was married (or living with my last ex) and I legitimately mean this. It's almost ridiculous how much I am enjoying myself and it makes me feel guilty when I see how tired my married friends are. I get to do what I want when I want and it is keeping me young and happy. It's total freedom.

I live alone and I love it. I am not even 30 and I can't deal living with women or roommates.

I do have a few good male friends. I make sure I attend to them when they need me. These few men can call me in the middle of the night if there's an emergency and I would run to help them.

I once had a shoulder dislocation while alone at home. I called an ambulance and after the adjustment I had the option of calling for a taxi. Instead I called my buddy and he ran over to pick me up. I later bought him dinner just as a thank you, but I had to insist.

What else do you need? I think having a woman around will only be a lot of burden for me. Initially, living alone was horrible but I have started to love it since my time and space is now under my control. It's all up to me know how I mold my life.

Once you get power over the pussy-worshipping part of your brain, it all keeps getting better from there.

I live alone, but I'm not old. I'm just 30, and I don't have any serious medical problems.

Also, regarding the medical problems, there are services like Life Alert which can be helpful.

I live alone in a small house on a small plot of land (~3 acres). My bizarro rescue doberman keeps me company. Life is very, very good.

I live alone but in a very social area of the city so I constantly have friends and girls coming over and barely have to go anywhere.

Been doing this for 7 years and totally love it.
