She's obviously not in love with the guy and is looking for a lame excuse to bail out on him. She's bragging that she's "planning" to be a mathematician. Like all women, this isn't really about him. I've seen women who major in mathematics and I can tell you, unless they're chinese they' will be a 2/10. A 4 at most, both personality and looks-wise, so the boyfriend is the one who should be embarrassed

Well in her defence its not really an illusion of superiority. I was in the same position a few years back with the genders switched and the lack of stimulating conversation and attempts to psychoanalyse everything makes you want to strangle them.

I don't think it's such a bad thing to want to match with a partner on an intellectual and income level. The answerer is assuming that it's an "illusory superiority". We have no evidence that it's illusory; maybe she really is dating down? The best thing for her is that they break up now.
