It's difficult unfortunately. One insight I've only discovered in recent years is that the "dream career" is an illusion. All jobs ultimately boil down to tedious grinding. So you can seek a job with stability and benefits, max out retirement contributions, and maybe avoid sales (but only if you despise it because it is otherwise good work).

This insight isn't terribly helpful but at least you will avoid disillusionment. You won't feel that putting the cover letter on the tps report is "beneath" you and you can focus on being easy to work with.

I doubt this helps, just tossing ideas out there.

Could be that that is more up to you than you may realize. I think you are not. 26 years young, not minding to work 40h/w, becoming aware of your environment, proactively seeking solutions. No, not fucked at all. Just not there yet, obviously.

I myself have no specific solutions to offer and will not repeat the old 'scale down out, scale up in' suggestion. So...

27 and in the same boat. MGTOW freedom means alternative lifestyles can be considered, which can also bring about analysis paralysis.

Like you I want the stability of owning a place to call home, but beyond that I have no desire for material trappings.

I'm becoming more inclined to want to get back to living a slower more simple life and to get away from cities, screens and 24hr news guff.

Just have to figure how to disentangle myself in the most balanced way.

If you're from the UK, aren't you going to rent instead of getting a mortgage? I hear most Britons don't bother with buying because of how the housing market is there.

I would say look into getting a passive income stream for yourself. Get something that will pay you money, even if only a little bit. Better to have a cash generating asset than a cash sucking liability.

Try to find an arrangement that works for saving, either salaries high and cost of living modest or a modest salary and cheap living. I spent the first 8 or 9 working years of life with very cheap rent which worked for me. I could max out retirement programs to reduce taxes (in Canada). With a lot accumulated and interest rates low, I finally bought a place 6 years back, but my recommendation to people is be flexible with cheap rent to then be able to move to places that can pay you well.

Alternatively you could teach English in a foreign country. Get to save an okay amount and see the world... albeit Asian world most likely.

Somehow you have to make progress on both fronts or you will end up a cog. At your age I worked for a couple years and then quit and traveled. I repeated that pattern all thru my 30s. Now in my 40s I am very secure in this. My house is paid off and no job can hold me longer than I desire to be there.
