i dont think flying cars will ever be a thing unless there is a solid infrastructure built that can override human control of the vehicles to prevent collisions. this would essentially turn flying cars into automated people movers to be "controlled" by a massive network of air traffic systems..

some people have a hard enough time successfully operating vehicles on a two-dimensional plane (roads) as it is - having to deal with what is in front of and behind them.. throw a third dimension in there, and we are truly fucked because then we would have to deal with: in front, behind, above and below. that doesnt even take into account different acceleration, deceleration, restricted airspace, etc..

I wouldn't worry. With 1/10th of the world's population gone, there will be plenty of room for flying cars. There will finally be enough resources to go around. Hunger will be eradicated! Gas will be cheap! The communist utopia will be achieved. /s

We already have flying cars. They're called airplanes, and you build one for a few grand for some joyriding.

There's not going to be any flying cars. If there were, you would have at least a hoverboard by now. Instead all you get are drones with spy cameras zooming over your house.

We have flying cars. They're really loud, dusty, and have huge dangerous spinning rotors. We call them helicopters. I don't want one.

Keeping a car in the air is just to energy consuming compared to just letting it roll, so unless we get an energy abundance it's only gonna be affordable to the top people, like a private jet.
