if you want to build good credit, start using your credit card to purchase items you regularly would and then pay it all off at the end of the month on time

I've got one that pays 5% back at grocery stores, another gives 3 back at restaurants, gas station and travel, and a third gives 2 back on everything. Just use the appropriate one depending on the purchase, pay off bills every month, and it's free money. All it takes is a little planning and discipline.

Do a search on nerdwallet for zero fee cash back cards and pick the ones in the categories that make the most sense for your spending habits.

Treat it as you would a debit card and only buy things you would have bought otherwise.

Pay it off completely every single month, no exceptions.

Cash back is great, if you pay it off monthly, its like a rebate. If you wanna finance big items, watch the interest rate. NEVER pay an annual fee for a card. American express has some free cards, and their dispute people are very good, most are in Indian Call centers, but better than some of the US jerks I have dealt with. Amex has rebates on gas and groceries too.

I won't tell you which one to get, but i'll tell you to be VERY careful about using it:

[i] Don't max it out, it can take 25 years to pay off on minimum payments.

[ii] Only spend enough that you can pay off completely at the end of each month.

[iii] Only use it as an emergency.

You'll eventually want to purchase something online. You'll need a card then. You'll eventually need to travel somewhere, and you'll need a card then.

As long as you use a credit card as a method of payment and not a loan (as in, you're only buying things you already have money for, so you can pay it off every month) it's fine.

What it gives you is flexibility and options and you can't match that with cash.

Just make sure it has no yearly fee. And you do not care much about percentage rate because you are going to pay off the balance every month so you will never have any interest charges.

After that really does not matter. I have one through fidelity so my points get transfered into a deposit into my 401K. YOu can check Bankrate.com for a listing of the top rewards cards.

BUt you definitely need one these days.
