Older men generally know what's what. I think it's a combination of a few things that keep them silence;

1) They're tired. A life being browbeat and nagged really takes it out of you 2) A twisted sense of "take your lumps"; they went through it, so so should everyone else.

Mainly the first, I suspect. However, I've noticed more older men sharing the wisdom.

I've never met a man who didn't come to regret his marriage. Marriage holds a man back in his life--kids doubly so. If you have no life goals outside of having kids (which by the way is a WOMAN'S goal) then go ahead and get married/pursue relationships. By the way, the second you give in and don't take the job for a woman, she'll never respect you again, and it's ogre.

He probably had a similar experience, and if he didn't he's old enough to know that a good job will serve you better than a wife financially in the long run.

Not all old guys will ever tell you the truth. Some are sadists and jealous of young men and eager to see them make the same mistakes. Misery loves company. Just sayin'. Some old guys are okay, though. I really respect those who are willing to admit the truth eventually.

If I were the old guy, I'd ask him... if the roles were reversed, and your gf got the once-in-a-lifetime job, would she take the opportunity and leave you behind? Fuck yeah she would... she'd probably not even have the time to tell you what happened before she ghosts you for $$$... AWALT so go your own way and take that job mofo

A few years ago, I was in Dublin handing out resumes in pubs (Polish immigrant, looking for any work I can find and all that). In one pub, I'm waiting for the bartender to get back to me with the job offer, and this elderly Irish bloke, all dressed in corduroy, walks up next to me and orders a whiskey. We exchange hellos, talk about the dog racing on the TV screen, and after a moment of silence, apropo of nothing, he looks at me and says:

*I'll give ya one piece of advice, lad. Don't ever get feckin' married. *

In some cultures and many before us when oral history was very important older folks were the bastions of knowledge. As time went by and life expectancy and technology older people became irrelevant as arbiters of the past, bastions of knowledge and so forth. Aware of this I make my time to speak to older people on the odd occasion to seek out that wisdom they were no longer expected or required to give.
