A year ago a friend of mine got engaged, he had been with her for 4 years. Then about 6 months ago, she started having second thoughts. Keep in mind he had been very good to her, always financially supported her, bought her lavish gifts.

She decided she needed a week away to understand what she wants in life. He was upset about it for a day, then when she got back from her 'thoughts' a week later he cut it off entirely, told her to forget it, if she's not sure now she never will be, he doesn't want that uncertainty, he got his own place and moved out.

For several months after this she tried to weasel her way into his life, but he didn't change at all. I'm not sure if he had sex with her or not, but she was trying hard and he would have none of it.

I thought for sure he'd fall back into the relationship as she really went all out to win him back. I was just surprised, as the guy seemed really into that sort of thing.

He met someone else recently and they've been dating for a while so he didn't withdraw from dating, but I was really impressed, most guys would take her back with open arms.
