How ironic is it that the only way to make an interesting female protagonist is to force a female option onto an already established male character?

Aunty Anita, in one of her videos, talked about how when developers take a female character and place them into a traditionally male role it is quite offensive because it's trying to force the women into a male dominated role/space. Yet when developers don't do this they're blasted as well.

I thought it was funny when people complained about GTA5 and how it gave male players the ability to kill women characters and then complained about Battlefield 1 not having female characters in a game where the whole point is to kill other characters.

This is a perfect example of a group that has no idea what they want and yet seems to get offended at every turn.

Ignoring all the other stuff the guy wrote about, I don't see the issue with a female Link. You can play as a female in Monster Hunter, Dark Souls, Bloodbourne, Saints Row, GTA Online, etc

Link is the hero of time, the single hero that can save a nation in it's decline. He's prophetic. The line of Links is solid and unbroken. That is why you can't have a girl replacing Link. It would be the same as replacing Link with a Korok. Only a potential Link has the ability to save the world from the biggest threats. A female does not.

That said, I do think a game with Zelda as the main character could be fun and great. And nintendo could pull it off, I'm sure. If they want to, that's great. But they can't have her saving the world as the prophetic hero, no. It would have to be a lesser adventure, which would not need to detract from it's enjoyment, not at all. Some of the best adventures are the 'zoomed in' ones. The ones that show heartache, and struggle, and emotional ups and downs, among other things. Less epic, but fun nevertheless.

And finally, at the end of the day, Nintendo can do whatever they want. As any dev can and should. No dev should feel pressured to change THEIR game in a way they don't want to. Game dev is already the most complex medium by a megamile, you don't want to add pressure to these guys.

I've always hated having female character options in videogames. Even in pokemon I would only catch the male ones and kept the females as my HM slaves.
