How do you get started traveling?

So you get lost, big deal. Pull out your phone and ask Google maps for directions. Figuring the shit out on your own is half the fun.

Pre internet I took the wrong train and ended up in some rural station in northern France at midnight with the station closing and about 50 dollars to get back to Edinburgh to catch my flight. I managed to go into the only bar in town, rent a room from a local until the station opened the next day and I could get to Calais for the ferry (it was pre chunnel too). I met 2 English cab drivers on holiday and these magnificent bastards got me to Manchester while making me laugh my ass off the whole way. From there I had just enough to get a bus to Edinburgh.

Point is, that was one of the highlights of my trip. Just roll with the punches and adjust and you'll be amazed at how much fun you have.

Whether or not it is more fun to travel with someone else is a personal preference.

Traveling with a woman ensures that it’ll be vastly more expensive.

Man, getting lost is the best part. I spent half my day today wandering aimlessley around Mexico City on my own and it was the time of my life. Ate a ton of street food, ended up playing drums in a park for a small crowd of locals, found a nice little market to explore....all unplanned. Oh, and no woman around to mess it up. My advice is to just pick a place, do a little research, learn some basic stuff in the local language, pack your stuff, and go. Easy as that.

Start small. Drive somewhere, spend a few days, explore. I always follow my hobbies or the warmer weather when I travel. I will say that traveling is expensive, at least for me, depending on where you’re going. I always travel to big cities so it’s pricey. In 2 days I’ll be flying out to Miami, never been there and warm weather sounds good right about now.

I say start small, and work your way up to doing it big. Or join the military. Say what you will about the government hypergamy and shit, but the money is ok, the benefits are good to great if you know how to use them. Military can take you almost anywhere, on them.

Get a 40L backpack and some decent hiking clothes, read up on onebagging a bit and pack everything you need in just that one backpack.

Figure out the region you want to travel (I reccomend SE Asia as it's quite cheap and pretty safe). Buy a plane ticket and just go. Don't plan shit, don't book hotels, don't overthink everything, just go. Pick up a travel sim at the airport wherever you land and then just explore.

Getting lost is kind of the point. That's when you really feel alive. You'll need all of your wits about you and you might have to actually engage with strangers. That's the whole point.

Having said that, I spend the majority of my travel time backpacking America's Wilderness Areas or mountain biking singletrack. Those are my favorite forms of travel.

man don’t be worried about getting lost all my best travel adventures where the times when I got lost or just stumbled across great places or people if you don’t know where to go just tie it to your interests then go to a country that fits

Meh. They I think everything is better with a woman. These are generally people that have never done any traveling alone. they went straight from doing it with her parents, to doing it with their girlfriend.
