Yeah, but everyone's definition of "self-improvement" is different. One passion I have is traveling around Alaska and northern Canada. I love the wilderness, the scenery, the wide open spaces, and the feeling that time is moving at my own pace. I'd choose to live in a shack up there over a mansion in Miami any day of the week.

But guess what? The Joe and Jane Somebodies can't understand why I can't be like them. Why can't I give up on the things I'm passionate about to get work decades at an emasculating, soul-crushing job for the boring house in the boring suburbs? According to them, there's something wrong with me and that's no way to live life. Don't I care about a wife, a family, a retirement fund, and having grandkids? Who is gonna take care of me in my old age?

To the average Joe, anyone who gives up on their passion for a boring job and family in the suburbs is doing it right, even if he is miserable. If you've decided to follow your passion and give up on that, you're in need of a psychiatrist. Some of these people are clearly not genuinely happy. They hardly smile, they have low brows, a tired way of talking, hunched shoulders, and money problems are in their thoughts constantly. Plus, they have a ton of regrets that they haven't been able to get over. Yet, they pat themselves on being responsible adults in a system that treats them like cogs. Since I don't have the same regrets and money problems, they resent me. Some of whom even said right out they resent me because my prospects for getting more out of life is better than their prospects. They are really pissed to know I can just get up and move on to a better life easier than they can.

I've met guys who are mainly interested in playing guitar, video games, smoking pot, and have no prospects for doing anything more than odd jobs. Since that's their passion and they are not doing anything to harm others, why knock them down for it? Will getting a regular 9-5 automatically make them happier or better people?

One of the reasons why I went MGTOW is because I hate the dismal boredom of modern living. Modern life says, "Finish college, get a job, get married, have kids, get a house in the suburbs, and that's all you need." Wow. Give up on passions to be another gray mass like everyone else.

I gave up on trying to justify my existence to the sheep a long time ago. They can think whatever they wanna think. One thing I know: they are far less happier with their lives than I am with mine. They think people should be like them. But they aren't happy with their lives. You can't say, "Be more like me" and not be happy with your life. Why should someone imitate the life of someone who isn't happy?

Last fall, I was in Alaska, and I slept in my car for several days, and it was the best sleep I'd had all year. Prior to that, I'd been working regular jobs and was having terrible sleep. This is despite the fact that I had a comfortable bed and all the comforts of modern living. But when I woke up in my car, washed myself at the local gym, and looked at myself in the mirror, I felt refreshed in ways the wife, kids, 9-5 could never give me. I later went back down to visit my brother. My brother is a successful businessman with his own company. But the stress of pleasing his wife and raising 3 kids is taking it's toll on him. He is truly a different guy (for the worse) compared to what he was 20 years ago. That's when I knew I'd made the right decision and had zero envy or desire for the regular life.

Thank you. My advice is to detach yourself from people who have become a drain on your life. I love my family. But they are a drag to be around. So I cut them off from getting to deep into my personal life as well as spending a lot of time physically in other parts of the world away from them. Even being two hours away from them can be a relief. I've tried to have an adult conversation with them but they just won't get it. They keep coming back to the emotional arguments like "If you don't get married, who is gonna take care of you in your old age?". I bring up a logical argument saying, "There's a 50% chance my marriage will end in divorce and I won't have anyone to take care of me in my old age anyway. What about that?" No reasonable response to that.

I've finally come to the conclusion that I love them but they are they biggest hindrance to a happy life. They don't care if I live a happy life. They'd rather have me blindly follow the herd even if it means unhappiness. So I have to be the bad guy in their eyes in order to find personal satisfaction.

Like you said, it takes a lot of guts to do this because it's so hard push the bullshit away. However, when I'm out there in that northern wilderness, I can exhale and say, "It's worth it."

Thank you....it is nuggets like this that keep me from checking out this sub from time to time. I don´t care for all the downtalking on women that have seem to become the core of content on this sub. Most women are just slaves to their programming. My observation is that there is mostly no malice in what they do they just do what their biology tells them to do and society encourages them and when they fuck up society steps in helps them or lets them get away with it. However that still makes them a liability and not an asset as we were always taught to believe.

Like you I have said a clear "no" to family life and all that comes with it. People around me have a hard time understanding that. Sure I did the "get a good education and get a good job"-scenario but the endless task of going from deadline to deadline pursuing the next step in your career to me simply is not worth it.

Definitely understand you in the second paragraph. When I did the 9-5 all the time, I had insomnia, drank myself to sleep, poor health/dieting, and I constantly thought, "When I finished school, I had a whole list of things I genuinely wanted to do with my life. I've been out of school for years and I haven't done 10% of the things I wanted to do. Most of these things I can still do. What's holding me back aside from my own indecisiveness?"

You're right, man, that deadline to deadline 9-5 existence is not worth it. But it's not just that. It's also that somebody else orients your life. You take a vacation when the boss says so and for how long he says so. Show up when he says so and leave when he says so. Eat when he says so and for how long. Dress the way he says. And have to live close to where he tells you to work. And do this for years, decades.

That is just not for me. There are so many interesting things to do with my time: hiking, mountain climbing, boating, fishing, cycling, racing, flying, swimming, sports, etc. Why does most of my year have to be spent sitting at a desk to make someone else rich while I get scraps for compensation?

Meh. I've met many people who have regular 9-5s and nothing else going for them. And I mean nothing. No friends, social life, hobbies, interests, anything outside their job. Some of these people run their own business. These are the people who wanna work long after retirement age. Cuz they know they've got nothing going for themselves outside of work. These are also the people who retire, find themselves useless, but then work at a job they don't care for or need the money, and they say, "I need this job because I got nothing better to do." That's why you got so many retirees working at dead end customer service jobs even though they don't need the money. Same with the old folks who wanna increase the retirement age to 70.

America is a nation of workaholics. Most people here have nothing going for them outside their job. That's why so many Americans judge people based on a quick assessment based on their job. Because they themselves live in a world where having a regular job makes up for shortcomings in their personal or social lives. The same people who have judged me based on my job always had nothing going for them in their personal and social lives. Nothing. If they were to be out of work, they'd have nothing to do with themselves.

Isn't this exactly what the two guys were saying, airmaildophin said, "It always bothered me that the second thing someone asks you in our society after, "what's your name" is "what do you do (for a living)?" For me, my job doesn't define who I am. If anything, it's just a means to an end."

Then ganjabat21 replied, "It's a status shit test. Based on what your job is they can measure up your worth based on the profession. Alot easier than asking how much money do you make?"

That's what the whole discussion arose from. By asking that question, you're not asking that question to benefit the person, you're asking that question how to financially benefit off them for yourself. You have stated you do it to help yourself and see about starting financial networks.

But by asking that question you're neither doing it for the benefit of the person you're asking, nor because you care/interested in them as individuals. You need to know their finances before you can associate with them and how you can benefit thru that. That is the issue in the discussion.

I get what you mean. Haven't made it up there yet but the Yukon, NWT or Alaska are pretty much look like paradise - northern Scandinavia (i have been there) pretty much is too. I'm very fond of the south west of England - in particular Cornwall. Honestly if i had a roof over my head i think i would live in any of these places, work a dead end job and enjoy a simple life. I sort of work in a shitty dead end job now but it suits me for hours and travelling. I like working nights away from the world with chilled out people who don't care. Plenty of time to read my books and learn and work on projects in my free time, often times on nights i listen to podcasts and audiobooks when not working. At weekends i often bring my side projects into the workshop if there is nothing much on. Money could be worse in what i do. By most metrics i am kind of a looser but the high powered corporate life with success and all the sharks, back stabbing, drama and stress never appealed to me.

I can tell you have never met anyone who is independently wealthy. There is no reason to dress in expensive clothing or drive around in a supercar if your job is to "manage your investments" and you're retired/semi-retired. If you're in a situation like that, more often than not it's advantageous to obfuscate your true wealth. So no, status is not evident by any means if you're smart.

One thing you have to understand is that when you wanna date, you're essentially putting up an investment on both sides. Women give up their bodies, men their resources. It just stands that men potentially lose more out of the exchange.

If you view women, every single one of them, as a prostitute with various prices, then you can properly gauge how much time and effort you wanna put in them.

For me, in wanted to do it out of a sense of both camaraderie and mutual support. I wanted to feel desired and special. Those feelings dont come for free, which is why I've decided not to get married.

The ROI for all the time and effort put into most females goes out the window whenever someone better comes along.

So I may have a few female friends, but as for love, you gotta constantly rent it.

Keep that in mind. If you work minimum wage at 30(like I do at 28) that's your bag. I personally won't shame you, but understand that if you are looking for a woman to keep around, you're out of luck.

I still take good care of myself(helps by being a minimalist) and on occasion I just get an escort.

The only thing a person's job tells them about themselves is exactly how much they can be exploited. Period.

I'd be more worried but I am done with dating. And honestly, my life has been a lot less stressful since then.

I have more disposable income than some.people with kids making 20 an hour.

Dont let loneliness make you stupid.

I have plans for my life, but as won't be ashamed of what I gotta do to get there.

Work is work, regardless of what you do.

I agree with this, fuck working a 9 - 5 making other people rich. Find your passion and work on that, you may not make money at first and you may have to work another job while becoming more proficient & skilled at your craft, but soon you'll make some money then later the amount of money will grow as your skill and portfolio grows.

Writing for example, you may be an average writer at first, but after a few short stories you publish your first novel on amazon and start seeing a return on the hundreds (or thousands) of unpaid hours preceding that accomplishment. That analogy is applicable to a lot of areas in life, like a trade, investing, programming. etc.

Point is, you should work so you can be proud to introduce yourself and what you do "My name is Chad and I'm a software developer, I created X, Y, and Z, and started doing it 5 years ago and was fortunate enough to develop my passion into a skill that now generates 6 figures a year" Don't let anyone dissuade you, perseverance is the measure of a man.

I suppose it depends. I've always thought there are two kinds of people. Those who are career driven and those who just work. I have always worked. I've done a few different jobs and i will continue to do whatever makes me a living for the rest of my life. If i lost my job tomorrow? I'd probably go travelling for a few months rather than dive back in to find a new one. I value time off over money. I work only as hard as i need to. Most of my overtime is side work - because it pays cash or favours so no taxman.

If you're career driven, good for you. It's not something i've ever really aspired to or understood.

The corporate world seems like its own special hell and running your own business is hard work - i know. I've worked for small businesses. I prefer just working.

I know some of the really career driven guys it's just a means to an end to retire early. Honestly i have no confidence in the financial system or the coloured paper we call "money" so i'm planning to work until i die and take my retirement while i'm still relatively healthy in my 40's and 50's by doing some travelling and using more of my savings then and then going back to work when i'm older and less able to enjoy it all.
