Have a not shitty mechanic look at whatever car you are thinking of buying, no matter what, otherwise you might just be buying someone else's previous head-ache and spending more on repairs.

Depending or where in the world you are... that said...

Older truck with a camper top over the bed... if you're gonna live in it.

Mileage is a biggie... diesels typically can take more miles.

Repairs... Can you do common maintenance on that vehicle?

A maintenance record offered is a good sign.

Tire condition... bad tires will quickly need to be replaced... a few hundred bucks.

Gas mileage/insurance... can you actually afford to drive it?

Check for rust... everywhere.

Something easy to sleep in. and that you can cook in.

ie not a sedan. and trying to sleep on fold down car seats really sux..

Better off with something like a small van, or a pickup with at least a canopy. A station wagon is ok for sleeping but not cooking.

Best cooking system is propane, but requires ventilation like opening a window some.

I went for a compact cargo van myself. Plenty of room to stretch out on a cot in the back.

Vans are usually cheap.

I suppose look at the mileage and check that it's not too bad. Also look to see if everything is up to date like maintenance and see how old the tires are if you can. Umm not a mechanic so don't really know that much but those are what I look for.

You'll need something you can actually sleep in. A truck with a topper/camper on the bed, or a van. You will not sleep well in a car, which translates into a host of other issues.

Miles and maintenance are of equal importance.

Finding a good mechanic is hard, but you need to log some hours looking in your area on yelp, google reviews etc for someone. Expect to pay a couple hundred dollars to have a real inspection done, so make sure you are only bringing in a vehicle you think is a solid choice.

Best to also factor in the security of the vehicle. E.g. Strong hard to bypass locks etc.

Depending on where you are going to park, anyone can take a like to your home/car while you sleep at night.
