They do it because they want to become middle man between advertisers and instathots. Now you can clearly see who has biggest nr. of likes and go to them, when they change it, if you'll want to know who has the biggest traffic you will have to kindly ask Instagram to let you know. And they will make money off it. Well in all these years I visited instagram 10 times, I literally don't undrstand how can you spend time watching photoshopped pictures of people but w/e I guess.

I am curious as to their reasoning behind this. As a business their decisions are still based on making money. It begs the question, who will profit from this? Now that there are no likes, people can just post whatever and there will be no way as a user to know how well it was received by the public. This lays a path for these big companies to shove even more opinions down our throats.

"But what about comments, people will still voice their opinion there!" I don't know about you guys but I don't post my opinions on my social media out of fear. This post has really made me take a deep look at social media and how dangerous it can be. Only the loud people will have their opinions heard.

Well it's removing like visibility to everyone except the person who posted something. You'll still able to see how many likes and followers you have but no one else will.

I think it's a double edged blade and I'm not sure that it'll really change too much. It'll be harder for creative folks to prove their credibility without follower counts to verify you in the eyes of potential clients, but at the same time it also means that if a company or individual asks to do business it means it's because they genuinely like your work.

But I'm not so sure it's going to effect the algorithm, just the way many people will validate others, meaning there won't be as much of oh she has X amount of followers she must be a big deal. So yeah, double edged blade, certainly will be interesting to watch it unfold because at the end of the day, the amount of likes won't matter as much if no one else gets to see that number but I suspect that won't stop all of em.

Do you think comments will become the new like? For example someone commenting '<3' may become the new form of liking someones post and then people will start competing for comments.
