Then the conversation turned to how "there is common law here", that you don't actually have to get married in order to be considered married when you're living together, and how that is great since it means they don't have to actively pursue marriage or hope to get proposed to in order to reap the benefits in terms of resources.

That was the point where I had heard enough and left.

This brief conversation is such a good illustration of the typical cycle:
