There are a ton of dialects when it comes to the Spanish language. Make sure whatever class you’re taking is specific to the region you’re interested in going to or communicating with.

Not Spanish, but I've learned French and German. Some people take 4 years of a language in school, but still can't speak it. The trick is if you USE the language in real life. If you're in the US, you should be able to find Spanish speakers everywhere. See if you can find a Spanish conversation hour. There's also a web site named Conversation Exchange where you can find a Spanish speaker who needs help with English, and then you talk in Skype, or even in person if they live near you. The important thing is, even if you're not very good yet in the language, start using it as much as possible. Speak with people in Spanish when you can. Make your shopping lists in Spanish. Listen to Spanish radio and TV.

Keep doing the lessons and use the language. You'll slowly get better until you're really good at it.

I am spaniard. My tip is... Focus on one "dialect". We don't speak the same in Mexico, Spain, Argentina, Colombia... We have different words and accents. Quite different. If you are going to treat with mexicans I would focus on that dialect. Because spanish is so rich. We have a lot of tenses. The subjunctive. The irregular verbs are difficult compared to English.

I learned english reading and watching movie shows.

You can try to watch Narcos, El Patrón del Mal. Argentina, Mexico and Spain have good movie directors. You can try with movies.

If you are progressing, then try to sing songs in spanish to try to nail de accent. We speak so fast and the "rr" sound is difficult for anglo speakers.

Another thing you can tey is to go to a mexican bar and try to speak with the people there.

You need to practice with people that they already know spanish, It will be waaay more easier for you. Also try to learn all the bad words first because sometimes a lot spanish speakers will want you to say some dumb shit and you wouldn’t even notice lol.

Just want to throw this out there, if you need someone to practice writing Spanish back and forth with I'll be a pen pal. I learned spanish 20 years ago by moving down to Mexico right after high school. I still use it on a daily basis working with Latin American countries for work.

word order is a big one, spanish natives who wanna learn english always struggle with this one, i would assume its the same in the reverse, remember that adjectives go AFTER the noun. EX: whiteboard = pizarron blanco.

FYI: Im Argentinian so maybe in other dialects its called pizarra idk really, the Argentinian is the most different i would say in terms of pronunciation and vocabulary. Mexican vocabulary is the most standard one from all the movie dubbing those guys do, and the closest to the US.

I used the Michel Thomas method (Foundation course CDs) to pick up conversational Spanish quickly, worked for me.

Look up Language Transfer Spanish on google... it will help you get conversational quicker. Maybe in 3 months if you work on it hard enough.

Look for news in slow Spanish. One element of study.
