Do yourself a favor and offload that Golf. VW's are a fucking nightmare. I would know. I'm a mechanic. Not a "HURR DURR 'MURICAN TRUCKS" mechanic. I work on everything. VW is over-engineered garbage. They're fun to drive, but trust me, don't hang on to it long term.
If you're looking at something contemporary, I'd recommend Toyota. I also like Honda, but they've been having issues with their auto transmissions. Many people turn their nose up at this next suggestion, but Hyundai and Kia are making some damn good cars as well. It depends a lot on how long you'd like to keep a car. If you're just going to finance and flip every few years, get whatever looks fun. If you want something to last a decade, I highly recommend Asian engineering. My mom bought a minivan two weeks ago and I all but forced her to get a Toyota, because I'm going to be the one working on it. Also, if you ever do decide to learn about cars, Asian stuff is a great combination of minimalism with robust engineering. You can work on almost all of them with a basic metric socket set. German shit requires sockets, torx bits, hex drive bits, e torx bits, it gets fucking ridiculous. All that being said, older German stuff is fuckin' awesome. My boss has a '99 Benz E55 AMG and it's a fuckin' beast. Really cool car.
Not just Jeep. All of Chrysler is fucking garbage. Like laughably bad. This is how I relate it to customers: All car manufacturers purchase the new models from competitors and reverse engineer them to gleam insight into what everyone else is doing. All the major manufacturers stopped bothering with Chyrsler because they literally manufacture garbage. It's also not just electrical issues. Chrysler has a major, major, major problem with corrosion. I'm not sure if it's from lower quality metal or lack of rust inhibitors, but it's horrifying at times. Just inexcusable. As for VW, yes, electrical problems can be challenging. However, their entire approach to vehicle manufacturing makes maintenance a royal pain in the fucking balls. It's hard to describe it in a few words, but the synopsis is they overcomplicate THE FUCK out of everything and it serves no purpose whatsoever. I wish I could tell you why they do it, but I can't figure it out. It's fucking maddening. I had a 2006 Jetta in for an alternator swap a few weeks ago. Called for about 1.5 hours of labor. It took me five motherfucking hours to change that alternator. I hate VAG from the bottom of my soul.
