My suspicion is that especially women have no fucking clue what it means to actually love someone, and a deep relationship with such an NPC is just not sustainable.

Marriage should be a contract that lasts for a finite amount of time, and can be renewed if both parties want to. When the contract expires, whatever financial arrangement was determined at the start of the contract will be what is enacted at the end.

I bet the amount of contracts broken prior to expiration would be a tiny % of current marriages, since if it's not working out, you already know when it will end, and if it's working out well enough that you'd want to renew your contract, then you will continue to put high effort into your relationship.
