I once read a great explanation for it.

That seven to eight years is the time it takes for a newborn child to mature. That those first seven/eight years are critical for female nurturing of a child as it is almost wholly reliant on her. After which time comes the ascent into puberty, and beyond that, adulthood.

This same theory suggested that the ideal parenting situation would be to let the mother be primary parent and caregiver for those first, dependent years, after which it should switch to the Father, who would continue to raise the child on a basis of teaching skills and self reliance. Now the child is more physically and psychologically developed, capable of picking up independent abilities and laying the foundation for adolescence and adulthood. Preparing them for the world and no longer sheltering them.

At which point the 'babying' and insulation of the child from the world by the mother stops being helpful and becomes a hindrance.

It makes a lot of sense. Especially in this context. That women are biologically hardwired to be dependent on the resources and protection of males only for the duration of this early nurturing phase. After which they are essentially ready to acquire more genes and start over with a new child.
