This is being presented as in support of "wage equality" but if it was really about equality then no gender would have been needed; why not just allow anyone regardless of gender to know the wage of their coworkers?

This source is a bit sensational. I do not live in germany but I know they are very strict with privacy. Since they also have to confirm with europe privacy laws. So you can not give this information on a per person level. (so no sheets with wath each person is earning)

This law states that if a company is bigger then 200 employers they must disclose what coworkers are earning on average in equal positions. I can not find anything that it says this information is exclusive for women only.

A positive thing maybe is that this might show that the paygap is a myth. If they are smart enough to express the salary per hour instead of per month.

However Germany is still going to shit anyway. :(

He was telling me how his females colleagues can now request to know how much he earns, but he is not allowed to know the wages of his female peers.

Wrong the law says:

Das Gesetz gibt allen Männern und Frauen einen individuellen Auskunftsanspruch, (..)

In the very first sentence it already tells you that both Men (Männer) and Women (Women) can request this.

it also says:

Dabei wird jedoch nicht das Entgelt einzelner Kolleginnen und Kollegen angegeben, sondern der
Median des Entgelts von mindestens sechs Beschäftigten des jeweils anderen Geschlechts in gleicher oder vergleichbarer Tätigkeit.

Which tells you that they can't see the exact pay of a colleague, but the median of the pay of 6 other colleagues of the opposite gender in an equal role.

Also the law doesn't stop here, but you only care about the "outrageous" part right?

It allows employees to ask for the criteria and process of their pay (grade) and similar roles.

The law is not sex-specific, men can also request the salary of their female coworkers.

You do not get the specific salary of your colleague, but only an average of at least 5 coworkers of the opposite sex.

The funniest thing to me about this bullshit is that in Germany it has been outlawed to discriminate in pay since like 1967.
