I'd like to offer a third:
Shit occured but was uncommon and not accepted in normal society. The progress made in communications - phone and eventually internet - allowed not only for us to be more aware of these occurences, but also allowed for the pathology to spread more and more rapidly.
In other words, people have increased their depth and reach in communicating the types of thoughts that lead to these sorts of actions. Like a social brainwashing of sorts. Peer groups are no longer just your group of high school or work buddies. It could be that the entire internet is considered your peer.
Watch what you become influenced by, it happens so gradually that it goes unseen...
As a side note, this is why you don't follow advice on the internet - you don't know who is guiding you. Taking relationship advice from the relationships sub reddit, for example, is an obviously poor choice when you realize that you're taking advice from people who are most likely only on the forum because of their own struggles with relationships.
