In France: upon marriage, everyone gets a prenup by law. By default it is "common property of acquired assets", that is, what the couple acquires throughout the marriage is considered 50/50, thus excluding assets that existed prior and inheritance, even during the marriage which stays personal. You can opt for other prenup: separate assets, common assets, or your own tailored prenup drawn by a lawyer. Only common assets are divided upon divorce.

When you divorce, any child support is based on a legal scale by the ministry (here if you want to have an idea https://www.justice.fr/simulateurs/pensions-alimentaire/bareme) and this will depend on where the child lives (ie 50/50, or more time at one place, etc.). Basically, if you earn 2000 euros a month, you will pay 196 euros a month if you have one child and you don't have the main residency. The cost per child decreases as you have more.
This is based on the fact that by law, everyone must provide for their children or parents (yes in France, you cannot disown a child nor you can not not support your parents if they are in need and you have the means).

There is no alimony in France. In case of very difference of income between the spouse, there can be a one time lump payment (payble in 8 years but since it is lump sum, one can pay it up at any time), as by law divorce severs any legal responsibility toward the ex. This is called "prestation compensatoire". If the spouse had refused to work when entering marriage, then she cannot get one (because the discrepancy in income is solely due to her choice). This situation is rather rare.

I live in America. Been married 2 times, both dissolved with no lawyers involved. It only involved signing paperwork and appearing before a judge.

First time, I let her keep the house just to get away from her cheating and lying ass. I just wanted to be free.

Second time, we just didn't get along anymore and I let her keep the house because her family paid for the downpayment and she gave me $13k and later $2k out of kindness.

Finally, I broke up with a girlfriend I shared a house with and let her keep the house. She gave me $11k, which was what my portion of the money would have been if we had sold it.

Yes, they kept the houses, but I got out free and clear. I just looked at paying for half the mortgages all those years as being the same as if I were paying rent.

You don't always make a profit, and you don't always get screwed.

American... divorced under N.C. law, i.e. no “grounds for divorce” other than 1 year physical separation. We settled out of court. I gave her the house with the provision that she had to sell within a reasonable time and I allowed her to keep the equity. We were married a long time, kids all over 18, so I only have alimony to pay. I got concession on alimony compared to what court likely would have ordered and I had to part with a little less than half of my 401k. My brother, a red pill guy, said it best to me... “why is divorce so expensive? Because it’s worth it!!”

A concept every man entering marriage needs to be aware of is "commingling". Basically what's yours coming into the marriage remains yours - unless you start muddying those assets with assets (ie. your paycheck) gained after the marriage begins. I recently divorced at the end of a 7 year marriage. Things were already going bad about 4 years in then both of my parents died and I inherited a small amount of money and a decent amount of land that had been in my family for ~165 years. Inheritance is separate property in most (all?) US states but if you start spending marital money maintaining the properties, or put inherited money in an account where you're also putting your paycheck and paying bills out of it, you're effectively giving your "partner" a way of getting their hands on it in divorce. If you inherit money, create a new account that ONLY includes the inherited funds, and if you inherit land ONLY spend money to maintain that land from inherited money. Track every expense in a spreadsheet and be able to document that zero marital money was spent on the property. I did all this and was able to keep my inherited property deemed as separate property and not subject to division in the divorce. Just the thought of that horrible excuse of a wife getting her hands on land that had been in my family for 6 generations makes me shudder. Don't feel sorry for her though, she still got $300K+ that she did nothing to earn.
