Women only understand fear and power. A woman may respect social boundaries, but only due to fear (not just from the person in particular but from childhood and also what everyone else around her will think of her actions). A child does not understand this either. They have to be taught, and corrected, until they have memorised these social boundaries. Dogs as well.

This is also why women get very jealous whilst men don't. Women don't respect their competition. Men will try to build a society based on respect for everyone. Women just want what's best for them. If there is no fear or power to stop them, they will take it, then try to rationalise why they deserve it whilst men don't.

Respect to most women now means to Kowtow. In my marriage it was a catch-all term for whenever I did something that was mildly irritating, inconvenient for her, and towards the end, made me happy. Anytime I did something outside of the "approved guidelines" on how to act (which changed daily), I was told I was not respecting her.

I couldn't give you a definition of 'respect' and I doubt that I 'respect' anybody but I do know what polite is and I seem to get by on that.

Respect must be earned by the person being respected and identified by the one who respects another person. I suspect that our AWALT in question doesn't care about the abilities, qualities, and achievements of others, unless she directly benefits from them. Even then, she feels little or no need to reciprocate these qualities, only take advantage of others for her own benefit.

Respect is when you look at someone who has accomplished more than you and appreciate it, not complain about how unfair life is and how they don't deserve what they have achieved. It's the feeling of wanting to emulate that person's achievement through hard work and following their example, not bash them in gossip sessions or on social media.

Respect is obedience.

I see the definition a few comments up about 'a feeling of admiration.' Problem is feelings aren't relevant unless and until they manifest as actions. We can't read people's minds yet. It's not possible to distinguish strong feelings from good acting. The only way to truly know what someone is thinking or feeling is from the actions they choose to carry out.

What action does respect manifest as? Obedience. Giving someone what they want. Paying attention. Giving them their space and not interfering with what they're trying to do.

Look at the most obvious context. What is respect in the military? You get an order from your superiors and you obey it. And you do it in a timely fashion and without expressing distaste or annoyance. School, work, same thing. Higher ups tell you to do something or not do something or tell you how to do something and you do what they say. Respecting a boundary (legal or emotional) means not challenging it. Don't approach, don't threaten, just recognize it and stay the hell away from it.

What is respect in a relationship? Giving your partner what they want, or avoiding keeping them from what they want. Making requests instead of demands. Paying attention to and remembering what they say. It's not so easy, of course, when they either won't tell you what they want or routinely change what they want, but that's basically it.

That's the only definition of respect I've ever found that works in all contexts. Respect is obedience. And thinking of it that way has made it much easier for me to withhold respect from people that don't deserve it.
