I am an accountant, in the uk the only advantage is a 1,000 transferable allowance. I was also married this cost me my house my children a suitcase full of cash child allowance for 18 years and put back my life plan by 10 years.

What are the tax advantages you think there are? If you are getting married just to save a few bucks, you are seeing yourself up to be taken advantage of. Comingling finances always ends bad for one of the parties. I think you'd be risking a lot for some short term cost savings.

The taxes you pay is a small compared to the cost of a wife or girlfriend. When I was married Me and my wife both had high paying six figured jobs but never had any money. The taxes incentive to being married is no incentive to be married. Your time and patience will be taxed as well.

There is income sharing for seniors. That might lower your income tax bill a bit but it's not much.

You get a tax break for taking out a $500K mortgage with 5.5% interest also. It doesn't mean it's a good deal. You end up paying far more on the interest than you save in taxes.

Same with marriage. You maybe save $2,000 yr at tax time, while she burns through $12K of your earnings.

Any tax benefits are put off by the rusk of financial ruin in divorce. You can enter an LTR and not ever get the marriage license so you're not legally bound. Children of course are always a legal responsibility. Keep all finances separate and maintain separate residences, you'll be happier.

It's what happens after the marriage that hurts. In Ontario, by law, your ex gets EVERY child tax break available even when you may be the one paying 100% of child care costs (which you got taxed on by the way). The more you look into family law the more you will be stunned at how tilted the playing field is.
