Probably best answer depends on how committed you are to the time, energy, money, and attention dogs require.

Cats are far less demanding

Dogs take time, attention and a little $. That being said, they are awesome to have around. I personally recommend a rescue dog. They are the best!

Shibas are cool dogs. My brother had one. One of the few dogs I really liked the most.

The phrase "man's best friend" exists for an indomitable reason. It's 100% true.

Also, what sex they are doesn't really matter with them either. Train them right, train them well, and they will be the most stalwart, loyal companion you will ever need.

The breed you pick is much more important, because like a kid, they are a huge time commitment (unlike kids, they won't fuck up your life). Definitely look at the pro's and cons of each to get an idea of general cost of maintenance. Size. Diet. Temperment. Required activity levels. Disease propensity. Vet visits. Medications.

As far as ethical concerns, do try to avoid breeds that have health problems due to intentionally being bred a certain way. The flat, squash-faced breeds and miniature sized ones are an excellent example of human hubris gone horribly wrong. On the flipside, the very large breeds may look impressive, but have very short lifespans. Ex: most Great Dane's only live roughly 7 years or so.

Lastly, I do encourage adoption. Please shop around at shelters first. And don't discount older dogs, if it's your first time. Many of them will already have some basic training. If you do decide to go for a purebred, do your research and only buy from a reputable breeder. Don't reward puppy mills and backyard breeders.

Go to the shelters. We always got our dogs from there. They are the most loving creatures in this world. Just go to a rescue centre, and believe me, the dog will pick you, not the other way around.
