3) If you want others to respect you, respect yourself. Even if you do that though, don’t expect much from women.

Edit: Figured it’s not your ride, doesn’t change that you should have confronted them. No need to yell and it’d be pretty easy to make her look like an idiot. Women tend to do that shit behinds people’s back but shrivel into a puddle of shit when confronted.

They were trying to provoke a reaction or make you doubt yourself.

The entire point is to make you second guess whether they were talking about you, whether there's something wrong with you, etc.. This is the kind of thing women do to eachother throughout their entire young life, like a social sport. It's so natural for many that they do it without thinking. It's also pretty cowardly and low-risk for women to take little shots at guys, for exactly the reasons you describe.

Why they would want to do either is not even worth speculating about. I assume these are people you don't know, so you're unlikely to care about their reasons.

The problem is that it works. We're naturally attuned to care about what others think about us. Don't be ashamed that their comments bothered you, that's just human.

That being said, you have to go through quite a counter intuitive thought process to get past stuff like this. By definition, the only people to make these sorts of comments are the ones that are careless. I'm guessing that as a quiet person you don't tend to speak unless you've thought about what you've said. You project that quality onto others, when in reality, chatter serves a number of functions to people around you, and it turns out a lot of them have nothing to do with making valid observations.

What you have to bear in mind throughout all your daily interactions is that the actions of others are solely a reflection on them. A girl calling you a loser has absolutely no bearing on what sort of person you are. It's hard to internalise, because a part of you wants to listen to what others have to say and take it to heart. But it's something you have to do before you allow the comments of others to poke any kind of hole in your mood, let alone your self-belief.

Another issue I'm guessing is at play here is that, as a quiet guy, you're often left wondering whether you were assertive enough, and may be perceived as a pushover. This one is more difficult, but I think if you really get a hold of that first point above it'll be unnecessary.

It's worth considering, maybe a confrontation in your carpool just isn't your style. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this. Is this a fact you can live with about yourself? If it does make you uncomfortable, reflect on how you would have wanted to handle that situation better. Don't obsess, don't replay the scenario in your head. Just think of a few different ways to handle it in such a way that your self-identity wouldn't have to suffer.

All this aside, I think you did fine. Ignoring a rude, muttered comment is an acceptable reaction.

Being called a "loser" by a couple of bitches is a badge of honor. You cannot and shouldn't go through life expecting respect and courtesy just because you didn't do anything wrong.
