You know, the well known cities.

But specifically Okeechebee which is a relatively small location near the Florida Everglades is a great place to be. At least for me that is.

Huntsville, AL. 3rd largest engineer/tech city in the country. Highest concentration of PhDs in the US. Great mayor who is bringing in all kinds of opportunity. Exploding city economy due to engineering/tech. Relatively apolitical city.

Could not recommend it more. I grew up there.

EDIT: avoid Sparkman Drive.

If you are looking to live in TN, stay away from Memphis. To quote a famous person, it's a "shithole". The good thing is you are young. You could spend a year or two in different states. Since you are looking for IT work, you could work for a consulting firm and travel a lot. Then, you'd get a feel for where to live when you want to make a permanent home.

Austin Texas is awesome.

Only other southern state I lived in was Arkansas. But only the Ozark is worth it imo.

Same but from NYC. I'm heading to Texas by the end of this year. Gonna buy a cheap property with some land near a body of water, build a shooting gallery, and experiment with bushcraft. Should be good times.

for IT jobs, you're going to get more $ and better opportunities in most cases near a larger city.

Corporate IT work pays considerably more than colleges or schools in most cases

If you want a more laid back IT job, avoid banks and insurance companies, they tend to have dress codes and stricter protocols.

Most stressful IT tends to be health care and law enforcement because those have to be 4 nines uptime or better

Startups can be OK, but you'll likely have to work 50+ hours a week or a lot more, and benefits are lousy, but payoff in the long run could be great. A relative of mine just got 25,000 shares of vested stock at a small software company.

Larger IT shops have typically more room to move up the ladder, and more turnover, and larger teams for webdev, appdev, sysadmin, netadmin, and management

Larger IT shops also will have bigger budgets for training and conferences

Whatever aspect of IT you're in, remember to ask about being on call, rotation of on call, how much travel will be expected

I replied to another person about TN but I figured I'd throw this out there. Chattanooga has the fastest internet speed in the country. So there's a lot of IT industry in the area. I used to live there and it's a pretty nice town. Not too big. Affordable housing. Just stay out of the bad areas after dark. The crime rate isn't too bad if you stay out of the ghetto.

Banking IT pays decent and always looking for people. Bank of America, Wells Fargo, BB&T, Citi, etc. Charlotte, NC is the place for this. Duke Energy also looks for IT people often and headquartered here as well. Raleigh-Durham area may be a good choice as well. I live in Charlotte and used to work under both industries and constantly saw IT positions available for hire and kicked myself for not getting in to those industries after school. I work as an aircraft mechanic though and it is pretty insulated from female BS and future automation so I have that going for me.
