Companies are here to make a profit. They don't give a fuck about you. The next time some corporate drone talk about loyalty, team work and unity remember that you're just a number. All that bullshit is just a shill to get you to work harder and for less. The moment you stop being "productive" you're off. It doesn't matter if you've worked for that company for 20 or 30 years.

Just to be clear - he lost his job because he was unable to work due to the wounds he sustained, not specifically because he shielded his kids from gunshots. Still bullshit, but different bullshit than you might have been thinking from the headline.

Depending on the circumstances, they may have been doing him a backwards favor, although in the Bronx I doubt it. Years ago a co-worker got fired because he up and left the job site multiple times without permission and without telling anyone. One instance he was doing traffic control (flagging) and he just left and almost caused a vehicle crash.

The guys wife was dying of brain cancer. She would call him and he would up and leave to take care of her.

The company fired him, but allowed him to collect unemployment benefits. Essentially they mutually agreed for him to be laid off. Not having to work allowed him to get his "home health provider" certificate which meant he was employed by her insurance as a caregiver. He made more money as a caregiver than he did at the original job and he never went without wages.
