I'm torn on this. My daughter is visibly uncomfortable when hugging relatives she doesn't see often and it appears that the only one to notice this is me. We can all say "hug your fucking grandmother snowflake, ffs, what is the world coming to?" and I do honestly see that side of it but at the same time why would grandma want the kid to be uncomfortable? "Family" is really not much different than stranger if they aren't in close, regular contact.

I mean, kids don't need to be corralled into hugging their parents, right? So it's a closeness issue. Does grandma's apparent need to be hugged trump the child's discomfort at being held by a giant (from their perspective) that they aren't comfortable with? We have to remember, we're like three times their size.

If they have a close relationship the hugs flow naturally. If it's being forced the relationship hasn't progressed to that point.

Somebody needed to tell my female coworkers, friends, associates at volunteer events, and bar chicks this stuff...they always sneak in the hug. I call it "the disarming hug," and a way to put a man on a suggestible footing.

Sorry but I'm going to have to agree with this, partially. My family was never big on being "touchy-feely" so giving extended family members hugs was always awkward when I was a kid. Also, watching family members kiss and not just on the cheek was very off putting to me. My brother and sister-in-law always forced my niece and nephew to come over and give me a hug when I arrived or when I left. Personally I didn't care if I got a hug or not and forcing them to do it was embarrassing to say the least. I don't want my niece and nephew to remember me as the uncle they were forced to hug, it gives off a creepy vibe and I never asked for it, nor wanted it.

The lack of physical contact at early ages is killing kids empathy. Oxytocin is released on contact. Not doing this is leading to wide spread depression.
