Ray Lamontagne has a great song lyric: “There's nothin' in the world so sad as talking to a man Who never knew his life was his for making”

Yoooo this was me 100% until age 28. Fuck it's depressing.
[–]HiredNote27 points28 points29 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Hey man, this was me until age 33. I'm 35 now. So at least you got out earlier than me.
[–]SSGTTANK7 points8 points9 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Ditto finally figured my shit out just as I turned 30 here about time.
[–]SendMeYourWhatever5 points6 points7 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Hey, I'm 35 and just figured this out just now so you got that on me.
[–]massy52531 points32 points33 points 6 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link
Fuck that shit.
I was a child growing up while all these pieces of shit were brainwashing me everyday with this garbage. I eventually came to see the truth like most on MGTOW but I lost a lot of years (the best years) before I did.
Why should any child expect their own parents to be acting against the interest of their own child ?

Yeah, it feels like a cheap shot when we were lied to by every adult in our lives, along with the backing of society.
[–]HiredNote9 points10 points11 points 6 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
I understand what you're saying. But I'm not gonna play the victim role. Before I was legally an adult, yeah, I can say it's not my fault. But when I turned 18, every choice I made from then on was my choice. When I turned 18, I was legally an adult and I knew this 100% on my 18th birthday. Unfortunately, I didn't have the balls to act on it. I tried to play the game but I knew it was bullshit yet I did it anyway.
I told myself, "I refuse to let my parents or anyone else tell me what movies, music, books, comics, video games, etc. to like. Yet when it comes to my own career path and relationship choices, I live under their control. Why?"
And it's a damn good question, when we're 18, we don't let our parents force us to like their movies and music, so why do we let our parents force us to go along with their ideas about career and relationships?

Admitting that you suffered an injustice isn't being a victim, it is admitting the truth.
If you know the truth of something, then it is on you. But if you were ignorant and lied to, it is another parties fault.
[–]SendMeYourWhatever0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Not sure why you're being downvoted here.. I agree. It's taken me way too long to figure this out and get out from under my parents' thumbs, but I take full responsibility for every action since 18.
[–]HiredNote1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yeah, that's what I'm saying. For my own spiritual health, I don't wanna play the victim role when it comes to every action I've made since 18. It's best for me to own up to it. That way I can learn from it, move on, and grow.
[–]massy5250 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Not advocating victim-hood.
There are plenty of guys out there stuck in misery for the next 18 years because while they were still young enough to be influenced by "trusted" caretakers.
Married to some shrew bitch that makes his life hell because again brainwashed. Never marry ever is what every adult should have been telling him.. Sure there is a reset button but the man pays all the price.
Also IDK how young you got out on your own but most of society legally and socially don't consider you an adult until you are actually 25yo in the US. Especially if your parents want to be vindictive about losing control of you.
career path and relationship choices, I live under their control. Why?"
Because as a child you have 0 experience with this part of the world and life. Its not unreasonable to expect your own parents to try to look out for you in this regard. It only leads to you wasting your life until your mid 30's.

I think it depends on the society you are brought up in, example Thailand. There Buddhism is practiced strongly, faith in acceptance, but is considered stronly shameful to not take care of family. In other religions throughout history it went against self preservation to not follow the herd mentality.
[–]Sir_manalot3 points4 points5 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
They shouldn't. OP's entire point is ludicrous and is anti-responsibility.
If you were lied to by someone who you trusted, the responsibility is on them.
[–]spaceman_spliff7772 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Dude most parents work against their kids. Best I can figure out is it’s a mixture of guilt and herd mentality. They feel guilty telling kids they fucked up and didn’t take enough chances—or worse, they never really wanted kids—and the herd of dead inside parents around them reinforce their decision to continue the trend.

Because they don't have your best interest in mind, they have their own, they're slaves to their primal instincts and that's all they ever knew so they want you to be the same.

Free will is an illusion, so no they don't deserve it.

Harsh but true.

Fortunately, I have always been the rebellious type.
My mother once told me to do something or I wouldn't get dinner. I told her I'll feed myself. I was 14.
Later in life, a woman was questioning how old I was and if I was married. I told her I had never been married. She said I should hurry or "I'll get a woman on her second run'. I told her I have all the time in the world.
Thinking for yourself is key. Making good choices is just as important.

This is such bullshit. if you never listend to anyone youd be living in a cave

Discerning the right advice to follow is certainly what the discussion is about. Blindly following is not a good move. Trust but verify

This is stupid as fuck r/getmotivated type shit. Fact of the matter is you need to work to live. Many people can't live out their dream jobs. How many people can be pro football players and such? Many people will have to work boring jobs. Many people will have miserable lives because of the society we live in and how feminism has ruined everything men traditionally enjoyed. I'm not taking the responsibility for that bullshit. It's just how society is.
I’m not sure I buy this. I know people who hate their jobs but travel all over the world with the money it brings them. They’re really happy, overall.
I know people who don’t give a rats ass about the rat race and who work with kick ass people who also make next to nothing per year. They’re really happy too, without any travel.
Point being, happiness and meaning are different to different people.
I read somewhere that some of the happiest countries are the poorest. I haven’t figured out what that means yet, but it feels like you can GYOW in your mind, and not let what others think of you ruin your view of you.

I don't agree a hundred percent. I do agree, everybody should take control of their own lives. But some have not took the pill yet. It's a question of time.

I prefer boring and predictable. Beats unreliable and unemployed.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Fuck you bro! That hurt AF because... that was me.
I am glad I saw the light and I am now unplugged from the Plantation.

Took me a while but I'm actually starting to follow my own directions thankfully better late than never I wish I knew and understood this in high school though. As soon as I made the concrete decision that I would work on myself for me to become a better person is when I started to see people dissapear from my life.
I stopped following them and their rules and finally started making my own. Now they're all pretty much gone. I got removed from my friends group chat that I put together and added everyone I genuinely cared about.
It's actually really sad honestly they didn't care to understand what I was going through and decided to just remove me and call me names... but ultimately I'm happier overall and would do the same thing, even earlier if I could get the chance.

It was me until about age 22, found myself cohabitating with an ungrateful, lazy female, working two jobs and wasting time on a degree that probably would've gotten me nowhere, then I found out manwomanmyth, everything changed so much ever since, leading a meaningful life is the only key to self actualization.

I feel gutted when I see this cause I see my dad suffering and working so hard for his family yet he's a priest at church and keeps telling me to give love a chance and it just hurts to think about him. I don't know what to do about it... I just want him to be happy.

Some advice given by our dads could be good. But we live in a different world now...
[–]NoCharism0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Once I was moving from Chicago to Los Angeles. My roommate at the time in a shitty Chicago apt was like "Dude, I wish I could move to California."
I responded, "Uh, you can. Save up a little and leave."
His answer to that? "Nah you don't understand, I'm from the south side."
I have seen the same incredible logic from other adults my entire life. Addicted to their own ruination.
I disagree given circumstances of society/family/friends/religion herd brainwashing, but agree if you know/learn the truth and still go down that path of following the herd. Not everyman is fortunate enough to have strong male role models who shed light on the truth. Some are fortunate enough to learn on their own, but that requires going through enough pain and sacrifice most times. Most will never see the prisons they create for themselves.
