Depends on your engine requirements, where you live, and how long you tend to keep a vehicle. I tend to run my trucks for 20 years, so taking care of them pays off
In USA, some of the premium stuff has better additives than lower grades. Older engines sometimes need higher grades to avoid knock.

Take the price of each type of gas. Divide by octane count. The price for premium per octane count per gallon is higher than the equivalent for normal gasoline.

Except that's not what it's about. Do you even know what the octane number is there. Its not linear...
RON is basically proportional to the temperature you can heat it to before it flashes or spontaneously combusts.
As you compress the air fuel mixture it heats up. If you have too low a RON/octane number for the compression ratio and speed of compression/rpm, then the AFM will detonate before the piston reaches bottom dead, causing a force to be exerted on the piston.
Octane number doesn't mean more power per bang.... Thats not what it's about....
Ethanol has a very high octane. If the top premium is RON 98 (93 in the US) E85 is about RON105-110 (100 in the US) but it has less energy per mL. And so is less energy dense and requires more fuel to get the same energy as the lowest octane petrol/gasoline. But it has a much higher RON...
