IMO, the "video games cause violence" argument is nothing more than shaming men and boys to man up and get married. A good husband has to work as much as possible, fuck his hobbies, dreams and goals.

Although I don't see why they bother. The video game industry is huge, and that kind of money making machine ain't going anywhere anytime soon.

Video games are only demonised because they compete with women for men's attention and cash. Women want all a man's money for themselves so they will destroy their competition. Marriage is the most efficient tool for the extraction of wealth from men. Prostitition extracts wealth but it is harder work so that is why women shame prostitution. It is competition for married women or women inclined to marry.

IMO violent books are worse than video games or film. In a book you have to imagine the whole thing, every gruesome detail in your mind's eye. Much more intimate and potentially harmful.

I grew up playing video games. I played Doom and Hexen as a kid. I ran around with realistic toy guns and played soldier. I played GTA 1, San Andreas, and IV later on. I am a huge pacifist. I can barely force myself to step on a roach. I've never been in a fight.

Kids who are violent are going to be violent regardless of playing video games or not.

Pay attention, read everything, then tell me if you can relate or if you see real tangible evidence on what I'm about to say.

If we consider violence in the context of cause and effect, then violence is ALWAYS an effect. It is an attempt to resettle a power imbalance, but always an effect, since if there is no power imbalance there is no cause.

So let's look at a few scenarios starting with absolute worst case scenario the serial killer - While it is true, the victims are typically always innocent (not the cause), the serial killers we have interviewed typically claim tremendously strained childhoods, or acts of trauma (The cause) against them.

Now I hear you, there are cases of true pathological bonafide sociopaths and yet still the rule is not broken the cause to their violence is often a combination of some past trauma or (in extreme cases when there was none) lack of conscious alone can be the cause.

But these examples are on the far side of the spectrum. Tucking in a little bit we get to non psychopathic forms of severe violence eg: rape. And I mean real fucking rape, not the new definition of the word. It has long ago been established that rape, being a form of violence is always traced to power issues and not for sexual pleasure "Oh I'm feeling horny, I think I'll rape" - unless the mind is so programmed to take sexual pleasure from rape, and give pure sexual gratification from the deed, and in this case we need to look at past trauma (once again the cause).

Trust me the whole argument scales and is bullet proof.

So what about school yard violence - nothing more than power struggles. Go ahead and watch all the /r/publicfreakout videos you can watch in a day, and apply the above theory. Notice how physical violence is often escalated when one party feels they have lost the power struggle or need to regain power.

Domestic assaults. Often a hysterical and yet arrogant woman with no self control and a nasty spirit will become the "victim" of one or more physical domestic assaults. This is because the man has depleted every attempt to deal with the situation using words / common sense / patience and logic and yet the problem still remains, She has literally cornered him to the point of temporary insanity where he questions his own net worth and may at times strike back in an effort to regain some dignity or a handle on the situation - In that moment his very life is slipping away from him. Once again cause / effort. And this argument doesn't include other forms of domestic violence which all too can be explained by cause / effect but are out of scope (would bore the shit out of you).

Joining the fucking military to shoot people up? Do you recall AA (Americas Army, a game based on unreal engine where you could sign up to go to Iraq through the game?). Again the game did not cause the violence. Cause / Effect - Cause here being that the target audience felt a lack of excitement in their lives, a lack of solidarity or purpose, they would find their purpose and direction and excitement in the army - And yes blowing shit up! The game had fuck all to do with this and wasn't really violent.

You see it would be (almost) impossible for a game to actually invoke violence because if we are sure that violence is an effect, then what exactly does the game do as the cause to remove power from us? If anything the game EMPOWERS the player - most of the time, and what follows is again out of scope - doesn't mean video game players are less violent --

So when can a game actually make you violent. Believe it or not it does happen. Ever seen those kids lose their shit in the heat of the moment over a MMORPG or while raging in CS? Maybe losing their password to their wow account. That rage is 100% induced by a video game, but according to what we know that anger is always short lived and usually always directed towards the computer in terms of punching a keyboard, throwing a monitor off the desk, or stomping out of the room. There has never been a documented case of anyone going out on a killing spree over dying in a video game or getting worked up over a video game. And the reason is simple - it's all about the cause / effect -> power balance dynamic.

Even in the hypothetical scenario of one player punching a bystander over an event in the game ALWAYS goes back to cause / effect and ALWAYS the game can be eliminated as the cause - rather the way the violent player felt the bystander observed or instigated - remains the cause.

The end.

&TLDR: Violence is an effect to restore power. Video games don't subject power from a person in a tangible way.

It looks like the author and co-author of these two retracted studies, Brad Bushman, comes with a built-in bias. He has said his primary interest of research is human aggression. The first study cited, I noticed, plays a verbal sleight of hand. He said players of first person shooter games became more accurate when shooting guns in real life. So while the abstract was technically true (or as true as it could be before being retracted), that there is a link between violent video games and real life behavior, there is no link between video games and real life violent behavior. He seems to be trying to get the casual reader of his study to infer the latter point. He didn't measure whether players were more likely to pick up a gun after playing video games, he just said their real life marksman ability increased. Becoming more accurate in target shooting in and of itself is not an indicator of increased violent tendency, nor even target shooting itself, especially when the study conductor thrusts a gun into participants' hands.

The second study is problematic in another way. Children watched a violent cartoon for 12 minutes and was found to have temporarily decreased verbal skills afterwards. However, a researcher looking into this study found the decrease uncommonly large, large enough to raise suspicion. Furthermore the level of increase was uniform when the researcher plotted the decrease. The level was the same across the board, whether it was gifted or non-gifted kids. It should be noted that Bushman not only did not conduct the study, he could not provide information on the data collection process. The author who did collect the data lives in Turkey and conveniently became unreachable after the coup over there. A data set where all the numbers move in the same direction and amount should have raised alarm bells. Data is usually messier, with differing levels resulting in a (hopefully) statistically significant pattern. The fact that Bushman ignored this obviously glaring consistency in the data set speaks to at best his confirmation bias and at worst academic dishonesty.

What's interesting is that violence has actually decreased with the increasing prevalence of video gaming. It's not impossible that allowing people to take their anger out on video games rather than real life has had the net effect of reducing violence.

I have been playing all sorts of video games with loads of hard core violence over the last 30+ years and by their logic, I should be a hot-headed SOB who gets provoked very easily and cause a lot of fights as a result, but IRL I am a very thick-skinned chillaxed dude who is sometimes nicknamed Santa cos of my jolly nature and appearance.
