I haven't seen it other than clips on YouTube. I had a chance, but I felt dirty and plus it's my brother's Netflix account and I don't want to throw him under the bus. But based on the clips that I saw and reviews by Youtubers (check out Cynical Reviews and his recording on his reaction to Cuties, he looks WAY uncomfortable.Link below), it's worse than it was hyped to be. And my main issue wasn't even the gratuitous shots of 11 year old girls' asses twerking or that they try to take a picture of a boy's dick or that the girls talk sex very crudely or that the protagonist unbuttons her pants when a boy (who might be her brother or cousin) takes away her phone but when she gets it back she locks herself in the bathroom, pulls down her pants and takes a photo of her genitals, perhaps to blackmail the boy, who knows.

No, my issue is that the director (who btw is female and black, which is really relevant) claims that it's a critique on the sexualizing of young girls, which by what I've seen and heard, doesn't look like it. It's doing the complete opposite. Also, it's a critique on the more ultra conservative Muslim culture the main character is brought up on, but as much as I've had my share of criticism towards Islam in general, I'll say, this movie actually makes conservative Islam look really good by comparison.

And again, the fact that the director is black and a woman is relevant because a white man directing this movie would have been Chris Hansen'ed by now.

Now if you want to see a movie that's crude and controversial but that actually has a strong and coherent message, watch 1995's Kids. Yes, it features inner city kids doing drugs and having sex, but at least that one goes out of its way to criticize drug culture, thots, douchebag Chads, and the single parenthood.

Well... from what I've heard the movie is actually about how our society rewards women for sexualizing themselves and how young girls emulate this behavior as a result, and how we corrupt our children's innocence by fostering a hypersexualized culture. Another theme was how Westerners are cool with treating women like sex objects, as well as with how Islam treats their women like objects, since the main character's father is away bringing back a second wife.

And you know, I suspect there's a force at work purposefully influencing the reaction of this movie. For the longest time I had no idea what the movie was about, and was just on the same boat that was "film sexualizing children? gross." When the film is actually a criticism of how we push sex on children.
