Through college and my time in the military I picked up 3 additional languages, and while it hasn't led to more or better career prospects, it has definitely broadened my horizons, expanded my mind, and made me realize that the US is not the center of the universe.

If nothing else, knowing you can be dropped anywhere in the world and order a cheeseburger can provide some degree of comfort. ;-)

I speak 3 languages fluently and speak a 4th partially (studied it for 6 years). It is extremely useful and it's great to know it, but there aren't really any financial benefits to it. It helps to socialize with more diverse people and improves brain functionality, but that is about it for benefits.

I know this is an unpopular opinion. But if you are planning on staying in the US only I'd say sign language would be a good one. I am a firm believer of speak the language of the country you are in. Therefore I have no interest in learning other languages because I wouldn't talk to someone in thier native tongue in the US anyway. If I were to ever go to another country then I'd take the time first to learn at least enough to get by passable in the native language. Sign language however is such an over looked option, and really to me is the only other acceptable form of general communication in the US.

Depending on the languages its easier to learn others. For example as HD George Takei (TFM + Halsey) says once you learn Chinese its easier to learn Japanese.

I would recommend becoming proficient in one language rather than the scattershot approach, right now the two to go with would be Chinese or Spanish. Unless you're going into intelligence then one of the Arabic dialects instead of Spanish.

As to what you can use it for - military intelligence, work for one of the alphabet soup agencies in the US, work as a document translator for companies, work as a broker for international shipping, etc.

Its the same as any other skill, it opens doors for you. Without knowing career prospects its difficult to say how it will help you directly.
