U.S. states have wised up in divorces, whether there's a child involved or not. My divorce rape was, according to the two attorneys I consulted with, a direct result of the state not wanting a dependent. Never mind the fact my ex-wife has a master's degree.

Beware, gentlemen (and lesbians): U.S. states will often determine alimony/maintenance by 1) what's available and 2) reduces the chances someone will be on the state's welfare system (ex-spouse or child).

In my case I was paying child support while being responsible for 100% of our child's expenses (who lived with me before/after the divorce). Imagine that: I took pride in providing for my child - it was an opportunity to be authentic and responsible. But to have to pay child support on top of that? And yet that was the law.

More and more states are determining the disposition of assets, not the divorcing couple. I don't fear women and don't dislike them. But I'm scared as fuck of divorce.

I know from a friend's past experience that the mother's spouse's name automatically goes on the birth certificate here, whether he's actually the father or not, as long as they're still married on paper.
